Baber FROM: Roger C. Diner SUBJECT' CBR Tests & Pavernent Design Castlevicw Way Stilihouse Ridge Subdivision Albemarle County rn Oct l/A lrr response to your memorandum dated 9.22.06, I have reviewed the five (5) C13R tests submitted for the above roadway, My review indicates that the tests appear to have been performed in a satisfactory maaner. However, the test for the sample at station 15+50 contains a computatiotT crcar i`or the CBR value and the stress - strain curve correction for the test on the material front station 25+50 is questionable. Correcting these two itms CBR values of 16.2 and 5.2. On the basis of the test results and an anticipated traffic of 90 VPD, a pavement design analysis confirms the adequacy of the Plan pavement design, In fact, the base corarse can be redueod to six (6) inches of Aggregate Base Material, lope I, 517e ZI/4 and still achieve the required structural capacity. It is noted that the plot labeled as "TESTED" on the design nomograph submitted with the tests is incorrect in that the Average CER value was plotted on the SSV scale vorsus The design CDR (which is 213 of the average), Please advise if"er dismission is required. $./ Roger C. )?liter Assistant District Materials Engineer COUNTY OF ALBEMARLE Department of Community Development 401 McIntire Road, Room 227 Charlottesville, Virginia 22902-4596 (434)296-5832 Fax (434) 972-4126 TRANSMITTAL TO: Charles Baber DATE: September 14, 2006 Virginia Department of Transportation SUBJECT: CBR Stillhouse Ridge The following items are being sent ® Attached ❑ Via Fax ❑ Copy of Letter ❑ Specifications ❑ Shop Drawings ❑ Plans ❑ Contract ® Other ❑ Plat ❑ Change Order COPIES DESCRIPTION 1 CBR tests for Stillhouse Ridge(Sta. 10+50, 15+50, 20+50, 25+50, and 28+50), Location Map, and Pavement Design Worksheet. ❑ For Approval ❑ Approved as Submitted ❑ Resubmit Copies for Approval ® For Your Use ❑ Approved as Noted ❑ Submit Copies for Distribution ® As Requested ❑ Returned for Corrections ❑ Return Corrected Prints ❑ For Review and Comment ❑ For Bids Due ❑ Prints Returned after Loan to Us ❑ Remarks: Copy: Signed: If enclosures are not as noted; kindly notify us at once. Final pavement design must be based on the results of appropriate soil tests. Preliminary designs may be based on values established in Appendix I. The nomograph depicted correlates the soil support value of the subgrade (SSV = Design CBR x RF), the traffic volume (Design ADT), and the minimum required pavement design thickness index (DR) for subdivision streets and secondary road pavement, based on AASHO design equations. This nomograph assumes the following: 1. Use of Design ADT for two way traffic, equally distributed, thereby deriving the thickness index (DR) required for any portion of the pavement to support one-half of the design ADT. 2. For DR greater than 20, staged construction providing an initial stage DR value of 20 may be permitted. 3. The District Materials Engineer may consider reducing the minimum DR value of 6.4 for secondary system facilities having a Design ADT <50. 26 Page 1 of 3 Greg Cooley From: Rob Cummings [rob@khals.net] Sent: Thursday, August 31, 2006 4:43 PM To: Clay Greene; Greg Cooley Cc: kirk@khals.net Subject: Fw: Re: FW: Stillhouse Ridge Attachments: Pavement Design Appendix Il.pdf Clay, It appears that based upon the GBR tests conducted by Gooch Engineering that the typical cross section for Stillhouse Ridge is adequately designed according to the Virginia Department of Transportation Pavement Design Guide.
