RE: Wawa at Pantops Corner
Dear Applicant,
The Albemarle County Architectural Review Board, at its meeting on October 1, 2018, held a work session on Wawa at Pantops
Corner. The Board discussed the site layout, the size of the canopy, the building designs, and the landscaping, and made the
following comments without reaching consensus:
1. The canopy is overscaled — twice as big as the one proposed at Rt. 29 and Proffit Road. The increased size is a dramatic
difference. Are there other canopy options that reduce the scale and massiveness? Can the area be divided into 2
canopies?
2. Is rotating the canopy an option? That might provide transparency through to the building. That might increase glare on
the street to an inappropriate level.
3. Switching the positions of the canopy and store would reduce the visual impacts of the canopy on the street and would
allow the building to be the primary element of the site. How can the design be revised so that the canopy doesn't
diminish the store's presence?
4. What options are available for making the building and canopy more consistent in appearance? How to integrate the
canopy and the building?
5. Is a single slope or flat canopy a better option?
6. The landscaping needs to be more robust, particularly along the street.
7. The solid panel railings at the top of the building should be revised to accurately resemble the historic detail.
