Hi Jeff,
I've noticed an omission on the landscape plan: please put the quantity of each plant proposed (i.e., 6 littleleaf box
and 5 mountain laurels) on the plan as well as the planting height (24" minimum at time of planting is required).
All other requested changes from the November 6th letter have been met. As soon as you send me a revised landscape
drawing which includes the missing information, I can sign off on your CoA.
Thanks,

Subject: RE: #180727 for ARB-2018-132: Christian Aid Mission sign application -- not complete (fee required)
Hi again, Jeff,
Although I cannot fully review this application until payment is received and processed, I've been looking at it some
more and I have a few comments, questions, and requests:
I have attached an aerial photograph of the site which shows a large retaining wall along the entrance drive, separated
from the guard rail by a few feet. Could you please mark up this drawing with the approximate proposed location for
the new sign? I worry that there is not enough room in the proposed location between the wall and the road to sink
footers.
Also, please note that overhead electric lines cross the property very close to the proposed sign location. You should
provide a site plan that shows the line and its easement, and contact the power company if there is any chance that the
proposed placement falls within the easement; if it does, a letter of approval from the power company may be
required by my colleagues in Zoning.
Has your client considered contacting VDOT to ask whether the sign could be located closer to the road, although that
is in the right-of-way? I'm just wondering, as I can see that your client is working with a constrained site.
In terms of the sign design meeting ARB standards and criteria, again, I cannot comment fully until I review the
application fully, but a darker cabinet frame (other than white) and a more neutral pole color (other than blue) would
be more appropriate for the Entrance Corridor.
Thanks,

Hi, Heather, thanks for your comments...
I apologize for omitting the fee from our submittal. A company check will be mailed to intake.
We will review the sign guidelines for the EC with our client and make them aware of the preference towards
monument style signs. Thanks again,

Hi Jeff,
I am the Architectural Review Board staff person reviewing your sign permit application for the Christian Aid
Mission. Unfortunately, your application is missing the $129.00 ARB review fee and I cannot resume review
of this sign permit application until that fee is remitted (please see the letter attached). Please remit payment
directly to the intake staff, if you have questions about remittance, please contact the intake staff directly at
434.296.5832.
For future reference, the only time an ARB review fee is waived is when a) the sign is not in the Entrance
Corridor, or b) when there is a Comprehensive Sign Plan for that parcel. This sign will be in and visible from
the Entrance Corridor and there is no Comprehensive Sign Plan for this parcel, hence the fee is required.
Those parcels which do have Comprehensive Sign Plans can easily be referenced on the ARB website, under
the heading ARB Comprehensive Sign Criteria. I am sorry that this error was not caught earlier, because
otherwise your application is complete and I appreciate the thoroughness with which you met all the
requested information and materials.
Although I have not reviewed the application, I have checked it for its completeness and I could not miss that
you are requesting a pole sign. Pole signs are not encouraged forms of freestanding signs in the EC;
monument signs are preferred. I am pasting a hyperlink to the Entrance Corridor Sign Guidelines here so that
you may read the language on freestanding signs. I have also cut -and -pasted that language below:
If your client wishes to erect a pole sign instead of a monument sign, please explain why monument sign will
not suffice. As the language states, existing site conditions should be the determining factor; as such, you may
wish to provide photographs of the proposed sign placement of the sign as seen from the EC, which is 5t'
Street Extended.
Please let me know if you have further questions.
Thanks,
