Groff Running across central Virginia is a vein of soapstone so pure and so large that it has fueled the economy of the region for over 100 years Called the Lynchburg Formation, this vein averages 200 feet in width and descends to unknown depths as it extends for about 45 miles through Albemarle, Nelson, and Amherst counties. Early pro- moters touted it as the largest deposit of soapstone in the world. The chronology on page 23 traces the commercial development of this deposit from the 1880s to the present. In 1883 James Serene and Daniel Carroll founded the first company to work the stone. Carroll coined the trade name "Alberene Stone' by combining the first part of "Albemarle" with the last partof Serene. This name was given to both the soapstone products and the company town. By the late 1890s Alberene Stone was the largest selling line of soapstone products in the United States, and "Alberene" soon entered the language, For many years the word appeared in Websters unabridged as a generic for soapstone as well as a trademark Soapstone is high in talc, the softest rock but the soapstone in the Lynchburg Formation varies from light gray and very soft to greenish black and very hard. Soap- stone is easy to quarryand to work it resists fire, acids and bases, and a variety of other chemicals, making it useful for laboratory sinks and counter tops. (Laboratory counter• tops and sinks at Los Alamos, New Mexico, where the atomic bomb was developed were made from Alberene Stone.) Because of its high electrical resistance it once dominated the market for high voltage Insulating materials. Soapstone also has the unique ability to store and slowly radiate back heat, making it a natural for use in stoves and fireplaces. Soapstone has been used for building material, cooking grills, partitions in public toilets, and that mainstay of the Victorian household, laun dry tubs. Even the waste and dust from cutting the stone was used - in the manu- facture of asphalt roofing and tires. Competing with Carroll and Serene's Albemarle Soapstone Company was the Virginia Soapstone Company at Schuyler, In Nelson County. Founded by Captain James Foster, who had been one of Mosby's famous Confederate Partisan Rangers In the American Civil War, the Virginia Soap- stone Company soon turned Schuyler into a typical company town with company. owned houses, stores, and hospital sur- rounding its mill and quarries. Two com- pany -owned dams and power plants on the Rockfish River supplied the town and mill with electricity. Photo 1 shows one of the quarries where steam -driven machines were used to cut the 3- x 4- x 7-foot blocks of soapstone that were hoisted to the surface by stiff -legged derricks. In the early days, wagons drawn by huge draft horses or oxen carried the blocks to the mill where they were cut Into slabs on a gang saw. AN4xiLST Co. Since the Virginia Soap. stone Company'scharterallowed it to build a railroad for company purposes only, this electric line was soon chartered as the Schuyler Railway, a common carrier. Soon high grade soapstone began run. ning out at Alberene, but the quarries at Schuyler still had plenty of high grade stone. The Virginia Soapstone Company needed cash, for expansion, so Albemarle Soapstone bought a controlling interest in Virgina Soapstone. The two merged in 1904 creating a quarrying and milling division (Virginia Soapstone) and a market. ing division (Alberene Stone Company). The two mills were soon joined by a new nine -mile -long railroad, the Nelson and Albemarle, built between Guthrie and Schuyler, allowing the mill in Alberene to finish high grade stone from Schuyler, and workers to travel back and forth easily between the two towns. The N&A leased four miles of track between Esmont and Alberene back from the C&0 and obtained running rights all the way to Warren. In 1965, the Schuyler Railway was rebuilt for steam operation and merged with the N&A. As its parts outlived their usefulness, the N&A was slowly dismembered. The Alber- ene section was abandoned in 1934. Soon the daily mail on the Rockfish line was a hand -pumped section car. When that track was badly damaged by a flood in 1944 it was not rebuilt and a company truck took over the mail run. All passenger service ended in 1950 and the last wooden com- bine was returned to the C&O. What was left of the N&A Dieselized in 1951 with a 44-ton General Electric locomotive (Photo 7). By 1961 most of the outbound traffic was by truck, and the rail service ended In 1963. During the railroad days and thereafter, the soapstone industry in Virginia has gone through a number of ups and downs. The mill at Alberene closed in 1916, and the operation at Schuyler (Photo 8) was re- organized to be the Virginia Alberene Corporation (Photo 9). This company went bankrupt in the Great Depression and was reorganized as the Nberene Stone Cor- poration. This prosperous company was bought out by Georgia Marble in 1956. The marble company ordered the closure of the N&& and its absentee management may have led to declining sales after 1969. 21 s-._,i ',r,+.ser...a.•..ir...,":.±- AAvt:w.ia* ,. _ n 1 .:-.'@f' , '11 Photo 70. MARCH/APRIL 19ag the mill at Schuyler was closed briefly in 1973, then reopened under local control and was finally purchased by a Schuyler businessman in 1976. A Finnish company now owns the mill and leases the quarries. In 1986 the Finnish company operating under the name, New Alberene Stone Company, Inc. began making soapstone heating stoves which are very popular in Europe. The N&A would make an interesting model railroad. These little engines running tank first, and pulling a few freight cars and a wooden combine Just cry out to be modeled. Any model of the N&A would have to include some mill buildings and at least one quarry. The various cranes, the mill, and quarry equipment could keep a scratch -builder busy and happy for years.
