This study option explores the idea of preserving the existing landscape as well as recognizing the importance of the existing historical house. Yet at the same time, we studied the op- portunity for commercial and resi- dential growth with consideration of the existing conditions. Previous study considered various options for configuring a series of small cottages on the property. Concerns expressed during our re- view were the location of the dwell- ing units, proximity to the existing house and views of the house from the front yard. Introduction Site Context 2000 MARCHANT STUDY October 03, 2018 We anticipate the uses shown in this study (small commer- cial) will require a special ex- ception permit from Albemarle County, so we expect some scrutiny will be applied to the sensitivity of our design ap- proach to the setting of the existing struc- ture. The scale of the units in this option are very much in keeping with the exist- ing residentital house. Our inspirations have come from images of `mod- ern' simple de- pendency build- ings that can be used for combi- nation of living and working. Topography on the site slopes ap- proximately 4'-0" (from the edge of the property to the existing house) which provides an opportunity to create a 4000 sgft commercial space of 2 levels. The commercial activity created takes advantage of the new businesses at the end of Broadway St. (Willow Tree apps.) and allows economic growth on the site.
