Hello Andy -
I spoke with Rebecca and Ron (Higgins) today with regard to your visiting the Alberene Soapstone quarry.
Since the gates to the various quarry (stone harvesting areas) locations may be chained to prevent access, it is
important to call Aaron Laufer at 825-4101
to schedule to meet you. Aaron may be out of town for a few days but I copied him on this email to put you in touch
for scheduling purposes.
The operation of Alberene Soapstone involves a mining operation that is continuous but at any period of time
depending upon the type of stone needed (to fill an order) the manpower and equipment is moved to the specific
quarry where that stone is either available to be moved (already mined and piled up) or the stone removal (cutting
operation) needs to be done.
On Monday, Aaron and I actually spoke with the property owner, Nancy, at the entrance to the quarry in
existence for a very long time which is across her property. The large iron gate is part of this and belongs to the
quarry. The access is restricted for safety reasons which is understandable.
We walked the access area and she made suggestions about what she would like to see done to clean up the
entrance somewhat. While this was a cooperative exchange, she later advised that she wanted no one using the
entrance or the quarry and has already called Zoning (Rebecca) and that Zoning was suppose "to do something about
it".
She also advised that she would be calling the police if they tried to come in.
At that point, the conversation was politely ended and she returned to her house saying that she would be calling
"Bonnie".
The Alberene Soaptstone processing plant is located in Nelson County a short distance to the South. It is my
understanding that the access to the quarry at this location has been going on for many many years and that the
Alberene crew tries to minimize the number of trips to harvest stone to the extent possible. (Both due to cost
and intrusion). Regardless, they have already been inspected by the Department of Mineral Mines and Energy and
approved to continue their operation after the same person complained to them. If anything, these property owners
have other issues such as their property's being subject to mineral rights leased to Virginia Soap Stone Ventures,
LLC (see County real estate department records).
If there is any information that you need, please do not hesitate to let me know.
Please contact Aaron to coordinate. Thanks -
