Utterback ATTENTION: Mr. C.T.Baber FROM: Roger C. River SUBJECT: CBR Tests&Pavement Design Fray's Ridge Crossing, sta. 10+00 to 33+50 Terra Bella Subdivision(formerly Fray's Grant Subdivision) Albemarle County In response to your memo dated 9-9-05,I have reviewed the six(6)CBR tests submitted for the above roadway segment. My review indicates that the tests appear to have been performed in a satisfactory manner. On the basis of these test results and the 850 VPD design traffic volume shown on the sheet provided with the tests,my pavement design analysis indicates that the proposed pavement section of 1.5"SM-9.5A.,4"BM-25.0A and 6"Aggr.Base Material,Type I,Size 21A is more than structurally adequate. In fact the base asphalt can be reduced to 3"and the design would still exceed requirements. Let me know if further discussion is desired. v LxP/l/ Roger C.Riner Assistant District Materials Engineer - .l. it -J 09107/2005 08:10 4349793759 VDOT PAGE 01/02 Virginia Department of Transportation sportatioa Residency 701 VDOT Way Phone (434)293-0011 Charlottesville, VA 22911 Date: _ - FAX(434)979-3759 From : phone: FAX : 97 _ • - :FU FA C.,7 mC j -, F-,,nems. Baber F I 'E„ FROM: Roger C.River T 20 SUBJECT: CBR Tests&Pavement Design G c: =^'..Y OFFICE Blucgate Court Fray's Grant Subdivision Albemarle County In response to your transmittal dated 8-24-05,I have reviewed the four(4)CI3R tests submitted for the above roadway. My review indicates that the tests were generally conducted in a satisfactory manner. There are a couple of minor computation en-ors on the reports that I have brought to the attention of the testing laboratory, but that do not affect the CBR values determined by the tests. On the basis of these test results and the anticipated traffic volume of 90 VPD,my pavement design analysis confirms that the plan design of 2"SM-9.5A over 6"Aggregate Base Material,Type I,Size 2IA provides a more than adequate structural capacity. I do note that the degree of subgrade compaction shown on the copy of the plan typical section enclosed with the test data is incorrect. Subgrade(i.e. the top 6 inches of earthwork in both cut and fill sections)is required to be compacted to 100%. Fill below subgrade only requires the 95%value shown on the typical section. Please advise if further discussion is desired. Pe,.e.,„ .)la R ged r C.Rincr Assistant District Materials Engineer
