I look forward to hearing from you. Please note that if you can move forward with an alternative materials solution that can achieve the desired form, you will need to revise and resubmit the last four pages only (I believe that is all that will be necessary, having just looked through your packet again) of your submission. You can send those to me electronically, and I will "slip-sheet"/add them in to your overall proposal. Please see my notes below: Hi Bob, I understand your concerns, and I see the logic behind extending the pier in question (circled in your image below) upward and capping it in-kind. However, those abstracted gable ends are rather unique forms and provide significant breaks along the horizontal, low -slung mass; additionally, their profiles can be seen from the EC as recognizable features. In addition, they create a nice marche, or rhythm, down the length that I fear would be interrupted by this one exception. Is it not possible to replicate this form in an alternative material than the current brick that approximates the color and texture? BP: Good suggestion, we have a masonry specialist heading to the site today to assess the situation. Sounds like you would be cpen to a variety of soliatons assuming we try to replicate as best we can the massing, color and texture of the architectural feature. i do believe we can get pretty close. We will be back to you shortly. I suppose that doesn't necessarily address the issue of load and structural integrity, but I would like to be sure that all possibilities have been explored before I approve this change. 13P: tide understand an,+ an. We did look at that detail and try and to conform with the surrounding context. The issues we thought about where #1 trying to actually match the existing masonry would be very difficult (we looked into trying to salvage the existing block, but the mason told us it would be virtually impossible to salvage, especially for a one to one change), and secondly and if we could find the block there is no structural line at the face of the storefront that we could load that back half of this detail to. Our approach was to replicate but at a higher plane, the stucco knock up shown below. Very willing to talk through this with you. Best. The one design concern I have is that your proposed "new parapet" (the brick -and -concrete bay divider) does not mimic the brick gable end with false chimney profile that is being demolished. It will be, as far as I can tell, the only such divider in the whole complex. If you were replicating the vertical bay divider that you are demolishing I could approve it tonight, but I want to confer with Margaret at the very least tomorrow 4 Bob4C prlrgeo, RA P r i r, C i i") c 1 4a .41East Ma1n Stt oe ChadWiesville, VA 22"0 DESIGN 43 8 06 8 3 A, P + " s ' , On Wed, Feb 6, 2019 at 5:21 PM Heather McMahon<hmcmahonhmcmahon@albemarle.org> wrote: Hi Bob, I'm looking at your application right now.
