There is an existing house that is on the 2 acre lot(27D1)that was built around 1980 give or take.The man I bought it
from had lived in it continuously from December 2002 to January 2018. It has a septic tank and a drain field and he
showed me where it was. I called the local health department and they have no records on that address.They only had
records on the septic tank and drain field from my house next door. (27E1)What do I do when there are no records there
is already a working septic system?

Hi Mr. Hallahan - I was able to speak with Bill Fritz about this issue. He indicated that we need written approval from
the health department for the primary and reserve (emergency backup) septic fields serving this house, located within
the building site shown on your plat (attachment) -just like we would for a new house to be built. I know this is not what
you had hoped to hear.
I am not sure who you are working with at the health department. If it were me, I would contact Josh Kirtley in that
department (Environmental Health Technical Consultant, Onsite Sewage and Water Programs,Thomas Jefferson Health
District Office (434)972-6288 Joshua.Kirtley@vdh.virginia.gov). I have always found him to be very helpful.Since they
handle this approval,whatever it takes to satisfy them is what will need to be done. I ultimately will need their approval
in writing.That approval letter is typically attached to a soils report they were provided.You also might want to speak
directly with a soils scientist to find out what they may have done for a client in a similar situation.Josh could provide
you with a list of those scientists if you don't already have one.

I had a soil Guy come out he charged me $600 and I'll check with him or the surveyor to get the

Mike—I have received the attached approval letter(via email)from Josh Kirtley of the Thomas Jefferson Health District. I
am not sure why it has taken this long to get a letter dated November 7, 2018.The day before receiving the letter last
week, I received a voicemail from him asking me to call him as he had questions. I have been out of the office a lot this
week and last dealing with a cardiac emergency. I just left him a voicemail today to call me. I have it on my calendar to
call him again in the morning if I have not heard back. I am thinking(hoping)we are good to go with this letter and can
sign the plat.
