(Be sure to also include these dimensions on the diagrams provided in Appendix B) ® Sign lettering and/or graphics in their proposed location. ® Entrance Corridor Requirements: If the sign is to be constructed in an Entrance Corridor also provide a color illustration of the front and side elevations of the sign showing: o Indication of sign I ype (channel letters, cabinet, panel, etc.). o Indicate on the drawings the proposed materials and kolorsl. Include standard color identification numbers (Pantone, Benjamin Moore, Acrylic, etc.) for all materials, text, graphics, faces, trim caps, etc. For channel letter signs, indicate on the drawing that the racewa color shall match the color of the wall to which the raceway is attached. o Provide accurate physical Samples of all colors proposed in the sign, preferably in the material proposed. Paint chips that accurately reflect the proposed colors are acceptable.) o Location of proposed eight fixtures d manufacturer cut sheets describing illumination type, intensity, style, shielding, color, and height. All lighting must meet ordinance requirements as outlined in Section 4.17. o For intemally illuminated signs, indicate which areas of the sign are bpaqu and which are illuminated. (Opaque materials don't allow light to pass through. When lit only from behind, the color of an opaque material cannot be detected nor can objects be seen through it. OK: the sign is not illuminated; stud -mounted individual letters proposed. 5.b When channel letters cannot be adequately accommodated, internally illuminated cabinet signs may be considered. N/A 6 Reader boards are discouraged. MATERIALS 4.c Materials used in the sign should complement the building being served by the sign. OK: wood and paint COLOR 4.e Color for raceway -mounted channel letters, the raceway shall match the wall color. OK: three small raceways, appear to be a color that sufficiently matches sign band area Sign colors must be harmonious with each other. OK: one color proposed: black Sign colors must not clash with the site, when viewed in daylight and at night. Use of three colors or less (black and white considered as colors). Additional colors may be approved if they contribute to the sign balance/unity. Overly intense color, (such as dayglo or fluorescent colors), are prohibited. OK SIZE, SCALE, PROPORTION, AND LOCATION 4.b Signs may not exceed the size, height and setback requirements as outlined in Section 4.15 of the Albemarle County Zoning Ordinance (unless sign has a variance). OK: 82" (6.83') x 65" (5.41') = 37' sf on 82' long storefront Appendix A.A A ratio of 1/3 text to 2/3 wall area or 1/4 text to 3/4 wall area is a good working proportioning system for placing a sign. The area of the Mansard slope is approximately 6' tall; the sign extends above and below the cornice line. Appendix A.A.4 Color, form, surface pattern, shape, and disposition of elements and openings in an architectural design can affect our perception of scale and can impact the appearance of a sign on a building. OK: proposed location on Mansard roof slope is appropriate, but it is not centered. 9.d The wall sign's size must coordinate with the architectural element's size. The size of the `b' and `y' are too large, as they extend above and below the cornice line. The sign should not over -crowd the architectural element, the wall, or the sign area. The sign is too tall for the sign band area Buildings and building elements should not be used as billboards. N/A 9.a Wall signs must integrate with the building's architecture. OK ARB2018-148: Tobey's Pawn — wall sign HNM 11/20/18 REF CHECKLIST ITEM NOTES The sign placement should not obscure architectural features or details, (such as cornices, windows, columns, pilasters and paneling). The sign band interrupts the cornice and fascia. 9.d An appropriate height for channel letters in a 30" high sign band is 18". The individual letters extend beyond the sign band; there is no clearance between the cornice and the sign band, While the bottom has too much clearance save for the tail of the `y', which hangs off the wall. This allows 6" of unoccupied space above and below the letters. 4" of clear space above, below, and to the sides of a channel letter sign is considered a minimum, with larger clearances required for larger sign bands. Degree of visibility, the distance from the Entrance Corridor, and the architectural design of the building/area will determine sign size, placement, and proportions. OK: the distance from the EC makes the sign size appropriate, but the height of the individual letters need to be altered. 4.d Lettering should be in proportion (font size and typeface style) to the sign and the building. OK Use of three typefaces or less. OK: 1 proposed Additional typefaces may be approved if they contribute to a balanced/legible/unified sign design. 9.e.iv The width of the outline must be in proportion to the width of the letter. N/A An outline width of 1/8" has been found to be an appropriate sign dimension. TRADEMARKS, CORPORATE LOGOS AND GRAPHICS 4.f The ARB may require that the color and scale of standard templates for trademarks, service marks, corporate logos and graphics be modified. N/A: no logo or graphics proposed When used, trademarks, service marks, corporate logos and/or graphics should be incorporated as an integral part of the overall sign. N/A: no logo or graphics proposed 5.a External (or no) illumination is preferred for approved graphics/logos; N/A: no external illumination proposed S.b internal illumination may be considered for approval on a case-by-case basis. N/A: no internal illumination proposed LIGHTING 9.e.i External (or no) illumination is preferred for wall signs. N/A: no external illumination proposed 5.f Any internal illumination is considered to contribute to visual clutter and will be limited. N/A: no internal illumination proposed S.c Internal illumination design approval will be evaluated on size, balance, complexity, and distance from the Entrance Corridor. N/A: no internal illumination proposed 9.e.iv The backgrounds of such cabinet signs must be made opaque (zero light transmission). N/A: no cabinet signs and no illumination proposed 5.e External illumination should be shielded and not create glare. N/A: no external illumination proposed ARB2018-148: Tobey's Pawn — wall sign HNM 11/20/18 REF CHECKLIST ITEM NOTES All external light sources shall be white. 9di Sign lighting (external) should be shielded so that it illuminates only face of the sign and does not shine beyond the edge of the sign. 9dii Channel letters with translucent faces must have no light spilling outward from the N/A: no channel letters signs and no illumination top, bottom, sides or back. proposed Faces and returns of channel letters shall be opaque when back -lit (halo -lit). N/A: no back lighting proposed 9.iv Cabinet signs shall have a non -illuminated background, or an opaque (zero light N/A: no cabinet sign and no illumination proposed transmission) background. Cabinet signs shall be constructed such that no light spills outward from the top, bottom, sides or back. 5.g All illumination shall be non -blinking. N/A 5.h An exposed light source that forms the body of a sign, (such as exposed neon signs), N/A shall not be used in the Entrance Corridors. ARB ACTIONS If LED lighting is proposed the sign drawing must state The level of illumination N/A: no illumination proposed provided by the LED lights will not exceed the illumination produced by a single stroke of 30 milliamp (ma) neon. Action on ARB -P Red acrylic #2283 has been determined to be an inappropriate color for N/A: no red color proposed (BP)2001-12 Wood signs. Pantone color match for 2283 is 485C. Red #2793 has been Grill approved as an acceptable substitute. Pantone color match for 2793 is 187C. (See below.) 12/21/15 action on Generally, for signs in the Entrance Corridors, red 485 may be acceptable ARB 2015-114 & - on a case-by-case basis as a secondary color. 115 Shell Signs ARB Action Memo: Visual clutter resulting from adjacency, for example at the Hardee's OK 5/7/12 locations, is a reasonable basis for not allowing illumination of the graphic. ARB Action Memo: Accent color letters can be used in a sign when portrayed as a graphic, up OK 8/3/2015 to 33% of the length of the sign.
