Dear Commissioners:
The Albemarle County Board of c... .pervisorst has found the County
in an extremely difficult position with the roads leadin . from the
interchanges of Interstate 64 to the various points of Lervir..:e and
routes towards other areas for the motoring public. The roads that
lead to 250 and to Route 22 North to ,ifrederieksburg from the inter-
change in the KesIvick area are extremely dengerous and no one ever
envisioned that they would, have to take the 6:fee or amount of traffic
that is nor being generated on these roads. The Ivy interchange,
which has generetea a great deal of traffic from the interstate to
250 and back for gasoline and restaurants as well as the traffic that
has been generated to get on and. off the interstate, has causel over
crowiing of roads that are seeing more traffic in one hour than they
are used to seeing in a number of days. These roads are dane;erous
to people who know the roads but are even more dangerous to those
individuals who are not extremely familiar with them. The Fifth
Street interchange, adjacent to the City of Charlottee-ville, needs
to have the highway widened all the way into the City if it le to
properly handle the traffic that has been cenerated from this inter-
change. It would get a lot more traffic if the roads from the inter-
state into town wore designed to take the traffic.
Route 743, a rural primary road leading from 29 North to Albe-
marle High School and towards Earlysville, has become the most over-
crowded road in our County. This road is becoming even worse as a
great deal of activity in this area for multi-family dwellings is
taking. place. Ths Planning Commission and the Board. of Supervisors
have expressed deep and grave concern on this road and, feel that it
should, be a part of the Primary ystem as i is a major urban col-
lector stree'v. We feel that it is extremely important that final
plans and specifications on this road be drawn immediately in order

that proper planning for setbacks and utilities can take place as
develoent along this road is proceeding at a most rapid rate.
Anal plans and speci4fications would allow for the Planning Cowlis-
sion a.J41 the Board of Supervisors to acquire rights of ray, utolities
- and blrAlding setbacks in order to preserve the right of way acquisi-
tion costs fox the future and allow building to take place on this
stretch as soon as possible.
The Commission''s attention to these matters will be appreciatei
and we believe ultimately it will save taxpayers' money as well as
enhance the safety of these areas.
Sincerely yours,
T. M. Batchelor, Jr.
