Re: Application of Claude W. Cotten for VA-75-01 to grant a
6. 27 foot variance - Tax Map 47, Parcel 26B
Dear John:
Mr. and Mrs. Gary R. Smith have asked me to write to you to
express their objection to the above requested variance. Mr. Smith is
in Chicago on business and will be unable to attend tonight's meeting;
although, he sincerely prefers to attend the meeting to object to the grant-
ing of the variance.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith have a lovely home on a 3 acre, adjoining
tract of land, valued in excess of $60, 000. 00. Their home has a feeling
of "openness", and the effect of granting a variance would be to create a
project effect in an area where minimum set-back requirements should
remain integral to protect the character of the neighborhoods.
If an A-1 zone is to be preserved, and if the people living in such
a zone are to be protected by the ordinance, a variance of such a large
percentage is wrong. My clients purchased their property in an A-1 zone
to avoid the very situation that a variance would create. They sought the
protection of the ordiance and should continue to benefit from its provisions.
In addition to the loss of the zoning protection the variance would
leave the neighborhood looking unplanned and aesthetically unpleasant.
Living in their home would be less pleasant for Mr. and Mrs. Smith , and
certainly the value of their residence would decrease markedly.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith request, therefore, that the Planning Commi-
ssion deny Mr. Cotten's request.
