Gentlemen:
We wish to start by expressing our appreciation to
the Board of coning eppeals and. the zoning staff for
your support of the desirability of enforcement of
our Llbemarle County Zoning ordinance as written. We
share your view that variances should be reserved for
true hardship situations.
Our present concern involves the request of Western
koAel(( :izzlin' Steak House for a variance of 48.5 square feet x,
- (essentially a 50 percent increase) to permit a sign of
148.5 square feet at Route 29 north and estfield Road.
At this time the Virginia Department of Highways
and Transportation has just made known the purchese of
many billboards on Route 29, north and south, in our
county in an attempt to aid our community in improvihg
our entrance from the north. Yle have received critical
attention for the appearance of this entrance in many
places, including twice within the past year in The
New York Times, a year ago in ,;;est Berlin's major newspaper.
-(;et feel that over time there is hope that we can all
work together to improve this entrance to our gracious and
historically important community. We do not feel this can
be accomplished by permitting larger signs that our overly
Lenerous ordinance already permits.
Thus we urge you to deny this request.

Telephoned Mr. Roberson at approximately 9 : 40 a.m. ;
requested him (as Secretary of the Board) to telephone
the other members of Board in reference to whether the
Board wished to rehear another application for Western
Sizzlin Steak House.
Mr. Roberson returned my call at approximately 10 : 00 a.m. ,
and stated that the following members agreed to allow
Western Sizzlin Steak House to be heard by the Board at their
next regular meeting : Roberson
Heath
Bain
Smith.
Mr. Roberson was unable to contact Mr. Brown. Therefore,
the decision to rehear was decided by an affirmative vote
of four members of the Board. (Article 7-1-1 of By-Laws) .
