Newcombe February 8, 1977 Shoney Restaurant Sign First of all, we would li4e to thank you for asking for a review of the conditions included in the variance granting a free-standing sign to the new Shoney Restaurant on Route 29 north. We would like to make just three short observations: 1. It is our understanding that a free-standing sign was granted in part because a roof sign was not considered possible because of weight considerations. 2. The sketch submitted with the variance reciuest indicated only the name over the door and the free-standing sign. 3. Three dimensional signs like the figure over the door have not, as far as we know, been permitted in Albemarle County up to the present and there does not seem to be any provision for such signs in our ordinance. Because there seems to be neither precedent nor provision for three dimensional signs in our county, and because one can envisage a great many kinds of three dimensional signs for which this Shoney Boy might serve as precedent, we urge you to adhere to your original reasonable variance.
