Existing Activity
A temporary drive-in claims adjustment office for the State Farm Mutual
Automobile Insurance Company.
Proposed Variance
Applicant requests relief from section 7-3 of the Albemarle County Zoning
Ordinance to allow a sign to be located on the property line; a variance
of 30 feet. Applicant claims the topographic conditions of the land impairs
the site distance. The sign is presently 35 feet from the center of route
250. This is a temporary sign that will be used approximately 18 months.
Zoning Ordinance Requirement
Section 7-3 of the Albemarle County Zoning Ordinance states all structures,
except signs advertising sale or rent of the property, shall be located thirty
(30) feet or more from any street right-of-way.
Staff Recommendation
Due to the area's topographic conditions, it is true the sign would be
difficult to sight. The intersection is dangerous since it is near the top
of the hill of route 250 east. The staff recommends the sign be set back
as far as feasibly possible and still provide the necessary sight identi-
fication. If the Board chooses to approve the variance, the staff recommends
the variance be only temporary.
