Dear Mr. Yousef:
This is a courtesy letter which we send 30-45 days in advance
before requesting compliance with County approved permits.
As you may well recall, the free-standing sign design submitted
by you was approved by the Director of Planning as consistent with the
purposes of the Route 250 West Scenic Highway designation. (attached)
You may further recall that a condition of approval for your
variance, was that the existing free-standing sign be replaced within
six months from the approval date of your variance. (August 8, 1978,
date of approval; February 8, 19m, date as the deadline. )
Before you desire to erect the sign, a sign permit must be submitted
by you to the Zoning Administrator. We are sending you the application
form for your convenience.

Applicant requests relief from section 18-3-1 of the County Zoning Ordinance,
to allow a free standing sign to be erected; a variance of 145 feet.
Zoning Ordinance Requirement
No structure, except as hereinafter provided in the case of certain signs,
shall be constructed within one hundred fifty (150) feet of the right-of-
way of any designated scenic highway or Virginia byway having a right-of-
way width of fifty (50) feet or more, nor within one hundred seventy-five
(175) feet of the right-of-way of any such highway or byway having a right-
of-way width of less than fifty (50) feet.
Staff Recommendation j.
The applicant placed his signs on the site before this hearing since he
desired to open his business on August 1, 1978. He understands his signs
are subject to this Board's decision.
Please find attached the Zoning Ordinance requirements for signs on the
scenic highway. Whatever the Board decides, the applicants will have to
follow the Zoning Ordinance procedure.
Therefore, at issue is simple the setback conditions as to the type
of sign or structure can be imposed by the Board.
The site was once a restaurant. The staff recommends approval with the
following conditions:
1. Compliance with area requirements and the Board will not enter-
tain a variance for area.
2. The free-standing existing sign shall be replaced in 6 months
with a approved sign as provided for in the Zoning Ordinance
and the sign be made out of wood or similar material. The sign
can be lighted by an overhanging or ground light not offensive
to traffic at night
3. The roof sign shall beremoved in 30 days as it is in violation
of the Zoning Ordinance. (Roof signs are not allowed - wall
signs are.)
