Proposed Variance
The applicant requests relief from section 7-3 of the Albemarle County
Zoning Ordinance to allow a sign at the right-of-way of Rte. 250 E and
State Farm Blvd. ; a variance of 30 feet.
Zoning Ordinance Requirements
I
All structures, except signs advertising sale or rent of the property,
shall be located thirty (30) feet or more from any street right-of-way.
Staff Recommendation
The Zoning Ordinance does not deal with this type of sign (street identi-
fication sign) , however, the Zoning Ordinance does provide for a subdivi-
sion sign under section 1680.16. In the following zones: A-1, RS-1,
R-1, R-2 and R-3; this type of sign is allowed. The Zoning Administrator
feels that the proposed sign is of similar intent and conforms to the
size requirements, square footage and height; and would recommend approval
and being within the intent of the Ordinance, providing that a condition br
a'
required, i.e. , that the applicant obtain Highway Department approval for
the line of sight as provided for subdivision signs under section 1680.16
of the Albemarle County Zoning Ordinance.

Dear Mr. Hurt:
On September 12, 1979 I met with Mr. Gordon Leake and reviewed a site for
a proposed street name sign which they desire to place. The sign location is off
the existing right of way on Route 250 and the proposed right of way for State Farm
Boulevard. The location of the sign will not create a sight distance problem for
traffic along Route 250. I do not believe that street name signs are subject to
set back from Federal Aid Primary Roads. However, I believe this should be confirmed.
As you are aware, the design of the sign desired is not of the type to be permitted
on the roadway itself.
If you should have any further questions regarding this matter, please
advise our office.
