9. CONTRACTOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR RESTORATION OF ALL EXISTING FEATURES, SUCH AS GUARDRAIL, SIDEWALKS,
BRICKWORK, CULVERTS, FENCES, SHRUBS, PLANTERS, ETC. TO THEIR ORIGINAL LOCATION AND CONDITION WHICH
EXISTED PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION. TOTAL REPLACEMENT MAY BE NECESSARY.
10. THE LOCATION OF EXISTING UTILITIES ACROSS OR ALONG THE ROUTE OF THE PROPOSED WORK IS NOT
NECESSARILY SHOWN ON THE PLANS, AND WHEN SHOWN, IS ONLY APPROXIMATELY CORRECT. IN ADDITION TO
CONTACTING MISS UTILITY PRIOR TO THE START OF CONSTRUCTION, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL, ON HIS OWN
INITIATIVE, LOCATE ALL EXISTING UNDERGROUND LINES, FACILITIES, AND STRUCTURES. THE CONTRACTOR IS
RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIRING ANY UNDERGROUND LINES, FACILITIES, AND STRUCTURES DAMAGED.
11. CONTRACTOR SHALL COORDINATE WITH THE LOCAL UTILITY COMPANIES PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTING PORTIONS OF
WORK IMMEDIATELY ADJACENT TO UTILITY STRUCTURES. THE COSTS OF POLE AND/OR OTHER STRUCTURE
STABILIZATION DURING WORK SHALL BE BORNE BY THE CONTRACTOR.
12. ALL WORK SHALL BE SUBJECT TO INSPECTION BY BOTH STATE AND LOCAL INSPECTORS.
13. FINAL ACCEPTANCE BY THE OWNER AND STATE WILL NOT BE MADE UNTIL ALL WORK SHOWN ON THE APPROVED
CONTRACT DOCUMENTS IS COMPLETED, INCLUDING PAVING, GRADING AND ALL ADJUSTMENTS.
14. CONTRACTOR SHALL ENSURE THAT PUBLIC AND PRIVATE ENTRANCE CULVERTS ARE FREE OF ANY CONSTRUCTION
DEBRIS.
UTILITY NOTES:
1. CONTRACTOR' SHALL TAKE ALL NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS TO PROTECT AND MAINTAIN UNINTERRUPTED SERVICE
EXCEPT AS ALLOWED BY THE OWNER.
2. ANY DAMAGE TO EXISTING STRUCTURES SHALL BE REPAIRED IMMEDIATELY TO THE SATISFACTION OF THE OWNER,
AT THE CONTRACTOR'S EXPENSE.
3. WATERLINE SHALL HAVE A MINIMUM OF 3.5 FEET OF COVER, UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE.
4. ALL TIE-IN CONNECTIONS SHALL BE APPROVED BY THE OWNER'S REPRESENTATIVE PRIOR TO BACKFILLING.
5. COMPACT EACH LAYER OF FILL OR BACKFILL TO NOT LESS THAN THE FOLLOWING PERCENTAGES OF THE MAXIMUM
DENSITY AT OPTIMUM MOISTURE CONTENT AS DETERMINED BY ASTM D 698 (AASHTO T-99).
5.A. 100 PERCENT BENEATH AND WITHIN 25 FEET OF BUILDINGS AND STRUCTURES, INCLUDING THOSE SHOWN FOR
FUTURE CONSTRUCTION.
5.B. 95 PERCENT BENEATH PAVEMENTS, WALKS, AND ROAD SHOULDERS, INCLUDING THOSE SHOWN FOR FUTURE
CONSTRUCTION.
5.C. 90 PERCENT IN OTHER UNPAVED AREAS.
6. AFTER BACKFILLING, FINISHED GRADE ABOVE TRENCH SHALL BE RESTORED TO ORIGINAL CONDITION.
7. ALL NEW WATER SYSTEM PIPING AND COMPONENTS SHALL BE DISINFECTED.
DESIGN CRITERIA:
THE KESWICK ESTATES WATERWORKS EXPANSION PROJECT SHALL CONSIST OF A NEW SUBMERSIBLE WELL PUMP
RATED FOR APPROXIMATELY 43 GPM, INSTALLED IN THE NEWLY DRILLED WELL #5. TWO NEW CHEMICAL FEED PUMPS
WILL REPLACE THE EXISTING CHEMICAL FEED PUMP TO CONTINUE DOSING SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE AT A HIGHER FEED
RATE TO ACCOUNT FOR THE ADDITIONAL RAW WATER FLOW. A NEW 22,000 GALLON ATMOSPHERIC, HORIZONTAL,
WELDED STEEL, ABOVE GROUND STORAGE TANK WILL BE INSTALLED ADJACENT TO THE EXISTING STORAGE TANKS. TWO
NEW WATER BOOSTER PUMPS WITH A MINIMUM CAPACITY OF 250 GPM EACH AT SYSTEM HEAD CONDITIONS WILL
REPLACE THE EXISTING BOOSTER PUMPS. THE EXISTING 6,000 GALLON HYDROPNEUMATIC TANK WILL BE REPLACED IN
KIND. THE EXISTING INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR ABOVE GRADE PIPING WILL BE REPLACED, INCLUDING INSULATION AND
HEAT TRACE WIRING ON THE EXTERIOR PIPING. NEW SENSORS, CONTROLS, AND MOTOR STARTERS WILL BE PROVIDED
FOR THE AUTOMATIC OPERATION OF NEW AND EXISTING EQUIPMENT VIA A NEW PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER IN
A NEW CONTROL PANEL. A NEW SCADA SYSTEM WILL BE INSTALLED FOR REMOTE MONITORING, ALARM TRANSMISSION,
AND LIMITED CONTROL FUNCTIONALITY. THE WELL PUMPS SHALL OPERATE ON SUBMERSIBLE LEVEL TRANSMITTERS
INSTALLED IN EACH ATMOSPHERIC STORAGE TANK. THE BOOSTER PUMPS SHALL BE CONTROLLED BY VARIABLE
FREQUENCY DRIVES THAT PROVIDE AUTOMATIC OPERATION BASED ON SYSTEM PRESSURE IN THE DISCHARGE PIPING.
THE SUBMERSIBLE PRESSURE TRANSMITTERS IN THE ATMOSPHERIC TANKS SHALL CUT OFF THE BOOSTER PUMPS
BEFORE THE WATER LEVEL IN THE TANK REACHES THE OUTLET PIPE AND THEN ALLOWS THE BOOSTER PUMP TO
RE -START ONCE THE TANK LEVEL RISES TO THE DESIRED ELEVATION. BACKUP FLOATS SHALL BE PROVIDED FOR EACH
LEVEL CONTROL ELEVATION IN THE ATMOSPHERIC TANK. PRESSURE SWITCHES SHALL BE PROVIDED FOR BACKUP
AUTOMATIC OPERATION OF THE BOOSTER PUMPS.

GENERAL NOTES

3. LAND USE PERMITS (LUP-A) MUST BE OBTAINED FROM THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
PRIOR TO BEGINNING ANY CONSTRUCTION WITHIN THE EXISTING STATE MAINTAINED RIGHT OF WAY
(INCLUDING ACCESS).
4. VDOT IS TO RECEIVE WRITTEN NOTIFICATION 48 HOURS PRIOR TO COMMENCING WITH INITIAL
CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES.
5. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL VERIFY THE ELEVATIONS OF ALL POINTS OF CONNECTION OR PROPOSED WORK
TO EXISTING CURBS, SANITARY LINES, WATERLINES, ETC, PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION.
6. UPON DISCOVERY OF SOILS THAT ARE UNSUITABLE FOR FOUNDATIONS, SUBGRADES, OR OTHER ROADWAY
CONSTRUCTION PURPOSES, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL IMMEDIATELY CONTACT THE OWNER. THESE AREAS
SHALL BE EXCAVATED BELOW PLAN GRADE AS DIRECTED BY THE OWNER'S REPRESENTATIVE, BACKFILLED
WITH SUITABLE MATERIAL AND COMPACTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH SPECIFICATIONS.
7. ALL STORM SEWER DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION TO BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH VDOT STANDARDS.
8. ALL STORM SEWER PIPE SHALL BE REINFORCED TONGUE AND GROVE CONCRETE PIPE IN ACCORDANCE
WITH ASTM-C-76. PIPE WITHIN THE RIGHT OF WAY SHALL BE MINIMUM CLASS III OR GREATER IN
ACCORDANCE WITH CURRENT VDOT STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS.
9. IF PRE -CAST UNITS ARE TO BE USED, VDOT SHALL BE NOTIFIED AND THE MANUFACTURER SHALL SUBMIT
DRAWING DETAILS FOR REVIEW. CERTIFICATION AND VDOT STAMP WILL BE REQUIRED ON ALL UNITS.
10. ALL CONCRETE SHALL BE A3-AE (AIR ENTRAINED 3,000 PSI), UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED.
11. ALL ENTRANCES ARE TO BE DESIGNED AND CONSTRUCTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH CURRENT VDOT
STANDARDS.
12. DESIGN CHANGES, SPECIFIED MATERIALS CHANGES AND/OR FIELD CHANGES FROM THE APPROVED PLANS
NEED TO BE RESUBMITTED TO THE ENGINEER PRIOR TO PROCEEDING WITH THE WORK. A LETTER OF
EXPLANATION SHALL ACCOMPANY THE REVISED PLANS AND/OR THE DRAINAGE CALCULATIONS, WHICH
MUST BE SUBMITTED AND APPROVED BY THE ENGINEER.
13. CONTRACTOR SHALL VERIFY LOCATION AND ELEVATION OF ALL UNDERGROUND UTILITIES SHOWN ON
PLANS IN AREAS OF CONSTRUCTION PRIOR TO STARTING WORK. CONTACT ENGINEER IMMEDIATELY IF
LOCATION OR ELEVATION IS DIFFERENT FROM THAT SHOWN ON PLAN. IF THERE APPEARS TO BE A
CONFLICT, AND/OR UPON DISCOVERY OF ANY UTILITY NOT SHOWN ON THIS PLAN, CALL MISS UTILITY OF
CENTRAL VIRGINIA AT 1-800-552-7001. THE OWNER SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RELOCATION OF ANY

General Construction Notes
1. Prior to any construction within any existing public right-of-way, including connection to
any existing road, a permit shall be obtained from the Virginia Department of
Transportation (VDOT). This plan as drawn may not accurately reflect the requirements of
the permit. Where any discrepancies occur the requirements of the permit shall govern.
2. All materials and construction methods shall conform to current specifications and
standards of VDOT unless otherwise noted.
3. Erosion and siltation control measures shall be provided in accordance with the approved
erosion control plan and shall be installed prior to any clearing, grading or other
construction.
4. All slopes and disturbed areas are to be fertilized, seeded and mulched.
5. The maximum allowable slope is 2:1 (horizontal -.vertical). Where reasonably obtainable,
lesser slopes of 3:1 or better are to be achieved.
6. Paved, rip -rap or stabilization mat lined ditch may be required when in the opinion of the
County Engineer, or designee, it is deemed necessary in order to stabilize a drainage
channel.

2. SILT FENCE BARRIER - 3.05 SILT FENCE SEDIMENT BARRIERS SHAL L BE INSTALLED DOWNSLOPE OF
AREAS WITH MINIMAL GRADES TO FILTER SEDIMENT -LADEN RUNOFF FROM SHEET FLOW AS INDICATED.
ITS PURPOSE IS TO INTERCEPT SMALL AMOUNTS OF SEDIMENT FROM DISTURBED AREAS AND PREVENT
SEDIMENT FROM LEAVING THE SITE.
VEGETATIVE PRACTICES:
1. TOPSOIL (TEMPORARY STOCKPILE) - 3.30 TOPSOIL SHALL BE STRIPPED FROM AREAS TO BE GRADED
AND STOCKPILED FOR LATER SPREADING. STOCKPILE LOCATIONS SHALL BE LOCATED ONSITE AND
SHALL BE STABILIZED WITH TEMPORARY SILT FENCE AND VEGETATION.
2. TEMPORARY SEEDING - 3.31 ALL DENUDED AREAS WHICH WILL BE LEFT DORMANT FOR MORE THAN 30
DAYS SHALL BE SEEDED WITH FAST GERMINATING TEMPORARY VEGETATION IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING
GRADING OF THOSE AREAS. SELECTION OF THE SEED MIXTURE SHALL DEPEND ON THE TIME OF YEAR IT
IS APPLIED.
3. PERMANENT SEEDING - 3.32 FOLLOWING GRADING ACTIVITIES, ESTABLISH PERENNIAL VEGETATIVE
COVER BY PLANTING SEED TO REDUCE EROSION, STABILIZE DISTURBED AREAS, AND ENHANCE NATURAL
BEAUTY.
MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES
1. PROVIDE SEDIMENT TRAPPING MEASURES AS A FIRST STEP IN GRADING, SEED AND MULCH
IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING INSTALLATION.
2. PROVIDE TEMPORARY SEEDING OR OTHER STABILIZATION IMMEDIATELY AFTER GRADING.
3. ISOLATE TRENCHING FOR UTILITIES AND DRAINAGE FROM DOWNSTREAM CONVEYANCES IN ORDER TO

6. CONTRACTOR SHALL CLEAN, RINSE, DISINFECT, AND
CONDUCT BACTERIOLOGICAL TESTING OF THE TANK IN
ACCORDANCE WITH THE LATEST EDITION OF AWWA C652
PRIOR TO PLACING IN SERVICE. TEST RESULTS SHALL BE
SUBMITTED TO THE OWNER AND ENGINEER.
7. EXISTING TANKS EXTERIOR SURFACES SHALL BE
WASHED WITH AN APPROPRIATE SOLVENT TO REMOVE
