Proposed Variance
The applicant seeks relief from section 7-3 of the Albemarle County
Zoning Ordinance to allow a free-standing sign to be located at the
right-of-way. Also relief from sectionl5A-6-1 to allow a free-standing
sign to be 17.50 square feet; a variance of 13.75 square feet.
Zoning Ordinance Requirements
All structures, except signs advertising sale or rent of the property,
shall be located thirty (30) feet or more from any street right-of-way.
Staff Recommendations
The maximum allowable signage for a free-standing sign is 100 square
feet. The applicant already has 964 square feet of signage. The
applicant could install a 3 3/4 square foot sign on the existing sign
and not need a variance for size or setback. Therefore, staff does
not see a hardship and must recommend denial .

Dear Ms. Miller,
I am in receipt of your letter of June 3, 1980 concerning the above
matter.
• It is not necj'essary for you to appear at the Board of Zoning Appeals
meeting on June 10, 1980. I will read your letter to the Board at that
time stating your opposition to this sign.
My recommendation to the board will be for denial. My reasons are
that the applicant already has 96 1/4 square feet of signage and does
not need additional signage to exceed the maximum allowable signage of
100 square feet as per section 15A-6-1 of the Zoning Ordinance. Also,
this sign would be; too close to the right-of-way of Route 29. I cannot
see where the applicant has a hardship and therefore will recommend to
the Board that this application be denied.
