DATE: February 20, 1985
Please check site to see how much signage is currently
on the property. I received a call yesterday that National
Bank is changing their name and they want to replace all the
faces on the existing signs. They have a variance, VA-81-68,
which was granted to allow 97.5 square feet of freestanding
sign ; a variance of 40. 5 square feet , with the condition
that the existing two logo signs of 180.5 square feet be
removed. I need to know if they are in compliance with the
variance.

The applicant requests relief from Section 4. 15.3.6 of the Albemarle County
Zoning Ordinance to allow 97.5 square feet of freestanding sign; a variance
of 40.5 square feet; and to allow 275.5 square feet of wall sign; a variance
of 95 square feet.
Zoning Ordinance Requirement
Pursuant to Section 4. 15.3.6, Business Signs, Free-standing or Projecting:
Provided: (b) the aggregate area of such signs shall not exceed fifty (50)
square feet. Applicant already has 57 square feet of existing freestanding
signs , hence the total area of new freestanding signs would need a variance.
Pursuant to Section 4, 15.3,6, Business Signs , Wall : Provided: (b) the
aggregate area of all such signs shall not exceed one hundred (100) square
feet. Applicant already has 180.50 square feet of existing wall signs, hence
the total area of new wall signs would need a variance.
Staff Recommendations
The staff again addresses the fact that the applicant has existing more
free-standing and wall sign than allowed by the current zoning of the
property. A free-standing sign adjacent to Rio Road would be to the
applicant 's advantage. At present there is no visibility deterent.
Additional wall sign is not needed for identification purposes . The staff
feels that applicant should show hardship. We cannot recommend approval .

We thank you for giving consideration to our request for a
free standing sign on Rio Road at the entrance to our property
which also fronts on Route 29 North. We have recently commenced
final plans for the location of an automatic teller machine at
our Fashion Square Office and in order to meet zoning require-
ments pertaining to signage square footage we have eliminated
a 90. 2 square foot National Bank logo from the rear of our
Fashion Square Office.

Enclosed please find an application for a variance for National
Bank & Trust Company located on Route 29 north. Please have the owner
of the property sign the application, or if you sign please include a
letter of authorization from the bank. The permit fee is $20 which
should be made payable to the County of Albemarle.
The deadline for submittal is December 28, 1981. Please return
this back to our office as soon as possible since I am extending this
deadline. The Board of Zoning Appeals meeting will be held on January
