Proposed Variance
The applicant wishes to erect a 20 square foot directional sign, 8 feet from
the highway right-of-way. Applicant requests a 16 square foot variance on
size of sign; and also a 22 foot variance on setback of the directional sign.
Zoning Ordinance Requirement
Pursuant to Section 21.7. 1, adjacent to public streets: No portion of any
structure except signs advertising sale or rental of the property shall be
erected closer than thirty (30) feet to any public street right-of-way.
Pursuant to Section 3.0, Definitions, Sign, Directional : A sign, one end
of which is pointed, on which an arrow is painted or otherwise indicates
the direction to which attention is called, not illuminated, four (4)
square feet or less in area, giving the name only of a person(s) , farm,
business or other establishment.
Staff Recommendation:
Directional signs are limited to four (4) square feet by the ordinance.
We feel that the 20 square feet is not necessary for the reason of setback.
The applicant wishes to locate the sign 8 feet from the right-of-way. The
6 inch letters on the highway sign in the near area is very legible. We
feel that the same size letters would be in line. The staff recommends,
if the Board wishes to grant the setback, that the size be diminished in
overall size.
