Proposed Variance
The applicant requests relief from Section 21.7.1 (Commercial District) of the
Albemarle County Zoning Ordinance to allow a freestanding business sign to be
located six (6) feet from the public street right-of-way; a variance of twenty-
four (24) feet.
Zoning Ordinance Requirement
Pursuant to Section 21.7.1, adjacent to public streets: no portion of any structure
except signs advertising sale or rental of the property shall be erected closer
than thirty (30) feet to any public street right-of-way.
Staff Comments
In review of the site, visibility is good south bound but is limited north bound
on Commonwealth Drive. We did find there is ample space at the required setback
to locate the business sign. There is a possibility of blockage of visual contact
going south if vehicles are occupying spaces adjacent to the grassed area. We
cannot make a favorable recommendation.
