The proposal includes concept level planting, walls, art, and entry signage. The proposed planting along Rt. 29 creates a dynamic, rhythmic and varied landscape the fits within the rolling matrix of field and forest viewed along Rt. 29. Planting includes groupings of large canopy specimen trees, medium sub-canopy trees and small flowering trees along with groundcover, screening hedges and alternating panels of ornamental grasses. Evergreen hedges create a backdrop for panels of individual ornamental grasses and gaps in the hedges are punctuated with diverse groupings of(mostly native) large, medium and small trees. In addition to the framing/screening hedges, panels of(mostly native) ornamental grasses are further defined by swaths of hardy groundcover. Meadow planted at the entrance incorporates the individual panel grasses and forbs in a diverse but simple matrix of foreground planting that grounds entry walls, art and signage. Native small flowering trees planted behind the entry walls add a layer of seasonal interest and provide additional screening and depth. Field stone walls with pillars, art and signage frame the entrance. A corten steel armillary mounted to the field stone pillar attached to the south stone wall punctuates and frames the entrance while a vertical corten steel sign is situated north of the entrance and perpendicular to Rt. 29 to mark the entrance and optimize visibility. The field stone walls and pillars fit within the built landscape vernacular of central Virginia while the corten signage and art adds beauty and visual interest. RECEIVED Slil. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
