RE: HELM and Carter Hilliard
Ms. King,
First let me tell you how saddened I am and we are by the loss of David King. He was truly a partner in our work and will
be greatly missed. I can't imagine the extent of progress both state-wide and locally for farm wineries without his
leadership.
Thank you for your email relating to Carter Hilliard. I'm copying Marsha Alley who will provide your comments for the Board of
Zoning Appeals.

Subject: HELM and Carter Hilliard
I thought it would be beneficial to write a note on Carter Hilliard's behalf. David and I have known Carter Hilliard since
he was a college student. We have always known him to be honest and trustworthy and incredibly hard working. Over
the years here at Roseland Farm , Carter has helped us with prescribed pasture burns, seeding new fields, planting corn
crops, building fences, and helping with vineyard installation, etc. He hires great people, has nice, well maintained
equipment, is knowledgeable about many aspects of farming........... and he has never performed any work that I would
remotely consider to be landscaping .... we have always been extremely proud of his work ethic. Carter would make a
wonderful neighbor. I wish he were our neighbor.
I am pleased that Albemarle County approved his location.... he has a rural farm business in the rural area which has
always been vital to this County. It is a shame that people move to a rural area and somehow make the people who farm
feel as though they don't belong. Long live farms and farm work in Albemarle County!
Respectfully submitted, Ellen King
