Variance Requests
(1) 2he applicant requests relief from Section 30.5.2.2 to allow a location
sign to be located 13 feet from Rt. 6 right-of-way, a variance of
37 feet; and also relief from Section 30.5.2.2 for the sign to be located
30 feet from Rt. 20 right-of-way, a variance of 20 feet.
(2) The applicant requests relief from Section 30.5.2.2 to allow a 2 square
foot directional sign to be located 9 feet from Rt. 20 right-of-way, a
variance of 41 feet; and also relief from Section 21.7.1 to be located
10 feet from Rt. 726 right-of-way, a variance of 20 feet.
(3) The applicant requests relief from Section 30.5.2.2 to allow a 2 square
foot directional sign to be located 8 feet from Rt. 6 right-of-way, a
variance of 42 feet; and also relief from Section 21.7.1 to be located
10 feet from Rt. 726 right-of-way, a variance of 20 feet.
Area Characteristics
(1) The sign is located on a wooded slope adjacent to Rt. 6, but also visible
from Rt. 20.
(2) This sign is located on a grade level below the road on a grassed area
between the bank parking lot & Rt. 20.
(3) The sign is located on a level terrain between the Shopping Center parking
area and Rt. 6 & Rt. 726. The site visibility is not affected by any
structures.
Zoning History
(1) The rezoning of the Hogshead's property does not indicate any develop-
ment of the wooded area where the sign is located.
(2) The site plan for the bank shows an open space where the sign is located.
(3) The approved site plan of the shopping center shows the area of the sign
location to be an open space with the exception of landscaping (trees) ,
but not in that specific location.

Staff Comments
The sign locations have been given approval by the Virginia Department of
Highways.
The signs meet the requirements of aggregate area.
Staff Recommendation
The two directional signs height are very minimum, which prevents any
visibility situation because of their location.
The location is in a wooded area which also prevents any visual impact.
All signs present a harmonious impact.
A favorable recommendation is warranted.

I talked with Bruce Hogshead on the phone on February 1, 1984. Mr. Hogshead
stated he had obtained permission from the property owners to locate the
directional signs at the Bank site and Shopping Center site. I informed
Mr. Hogshead that he would need to show our office written permission. Mr.
Hogshead also had the Highway Department help to locate the signs so they
would clear the state right-of-way. I also informed Mr. Hogshead that he
will probably have to obtain a permit for the sign located on his property
at the intersection of Route 20 & Route 6, and that all of the signs should
meet the required setback for that zone.

As an adjoining landowner and long-term resident of
Scottsville , I wish to register my support for the sign
variance requested by Bruce and Polly Hogshead. Their signs
are small , attractive and, I believe , are appropriately
placed. Also , I appreciate that they need the signs because
of the isolated location of their shop.
Since the Hogshead's moved to Scottsville two years
ago , they have improved the community by renovating an old
house for their shop and by improving the appearance of
their six acres.

They feel that the signs are quite tastefully done and in no way see them

conveyed to Ellen Sclater, and another dated June 5, 1926, recorded in Deed
Book 193 page 500, wherein one acre, more or less, was conveyed to N.T.
Sclater.
