Description of Request: Forest Lakes Associates requests
permission to construct a 39 square foot identification sign
for the Forest Lakes Swim and Tennis Club to be located 1'
off the state right-of-way on Timberwood Boulevard at the
entrance to the club complex.
Justification for Request: Forest Lakes Associates is
requesting a variance on the size and setback of the Forest
Lakes Swim and Tennis Club identification sign. The sign
code allows for neither signs of adequate square footage nor
setback distance to serve a recreational facility the size
of the Swim and Tennis Club in a planned community as large
as Forest Lakes. The identification sign for the Club must
be large enough and close enough to Timberwood Boulevard to
provide a large volume of motorists with easy identification
and safe, convenient access to the Club. Neither the size
of the sign nor the 1' setback would in any way hinder sight
distance for motorists entering or exiting the club complex.
The sign size and design will be in keeping with other signs
in the Forest Lakes community. The Board of Supervisors,
the Planning Commission and the Board of Zoning appeals have
been shown a prototype community in North Carolina through
slide presentations; included in these presentations were
explanations of and examples of the prototype's coordinated
approach to signage. The sign code, as it currently stands,
would not allow this coordinated approach to signage to be
extended to the Forest Lakes Swim and Tennis Club
identification marker, as was done in the prototype
community.
