Re: Board of Zoning Appeals Action
VA-88-77, Tax Map 130A1, Parcel 50
Dear Mr. Karr:
This letter is to inform you that on December 13 , 1988, during
the regular meeting of the Albemarle County Board of Zoning
Appeals, the Board ruled to grant your variance request, VA-88-77 ,
with the condition that the Zoning Administrator and Director of
Planning approve the design, color, and materials of the sign.
This variance approval allows relief from Section 30. 5. 7. 2 of
the Albemarle County Zoning Ordinance to increase the sign area of
a directional sign in the Scenic Areas Highway Overlay District
from the maximum allowable area of two (2) square feet to four (4)
square feet.
If you have any questions, please contact our office.
Sincerely,

Sign Permit #S-88-94
STAFF REPORT - VA-88-77
APPLICANT: National Bank & Trust Company
TAX MAP/PARCEL: 130A(1)/50
ZONING: PD-SC (Planned Development Shopping Center
LOCATION: Located on the southwest corner of the
intersection of Rt. 20 and Rt. 726
The applicant seeks a variance from Section 30.5. 7.2 of the
Albemarle County Zoning Ordinance. This section states:
"30.5.7.2 Regulation of Number, Height, Area, Types of Signs
The following regulations shall be in addition to Section 4 . 15. 3
generally and shall be in addition to Section 4. 15. 3 generally and
shall be further limitation on regulations contained in Sections
4. 15. 3 . 6 and 4. 15. 3 .7, specifically:
(a) The aggregate sign areas allowed for free-standing business,
projecting business, business wall, locational, and
directional signs shall be reduced by one-half within
SA-highway districts.
The applicant requests an increase in the aggregate area of a
directional sign from two (2) square feet to four (4) square feet.
In May, 1984 the Board of Zoning Appeals approved a variance for
James River Runners to locate a directional sign along with two
(2) other free-standing signs on Tax Map 130A(1) , Parcel 50. The
Board attached a condition that "should another applicant apply
that this applicant would have to share the same stanchion. "
Is the intent of the SA-Highways regulations to control the size,
design, and location of signs within the district? The applicant
will provide a two (2) square foot sign to be mounted on the
existing stanchion, providing an additional directional sign which
directs the motorist to the Scottsville Shopping Center. The
design, color, and materials will be in keeping with the
SA-Highways general regulations.
RECOMMENDATION
The application should be approved because the hardship is
generally unique to this property, and the granting of the
variance should not be of any detriment to the adjacent properties
nor will the character of the district be altered.
The recommendation of approval of the sign should be subject to
the approval of the Zoning Administrator and the Director of
Planning for design, color, and materials.
