There are many precedences for approving this request for variance. They are
sign placement on Rio Road at such activities as:

Fashion Square Mall (East entrance ring road)
Coldwell Banker Realty
Fountain Court Apartments
First Assembly of God Church

Raymond S. Webster, Chairman of the trustees for Aldersgate United
Methodist Church, stated that Dwight Cragun who was the Chairman
of the Board was present with him to speak for the application.
He stated that they thought they were replacing a sign, but when
Mr. Grady came down to check out the lighting part he explained
that they needed to apply for a variance. He stated that he had
some pictures of other signs in the area that were located close
to the road. He asked for the variance to be approved to allow
the sign to remain in the same location. He stated that the new
sign was smaller than the older one.
Mr. Cragun stated that the road right-of-way boundary was about
three feet inside of the turn lane into the church. He stated
that they wanted one more foot back from that.
Mr. Rennolds stated that they would actually be 4 feet off the
turn lane.
Mr. Cragun stated that the sign was a memorial gift from a member
and they started to erect it in the same location as the old sign,
but when they asked for an Inspector to check it they found out
they needed a variance.
Mr. Kennedy asked if it was considered a nonconforming sign?
Mr. Evans stated that it could be considered a nonconforming sign
because the County did not have any record of it.
The Chairman invited public comment.
There being no further comment, the matter was placed before the
Board.
Mr. Rennolds stated the sign was already there and was there
before and actually the new sign was better and did not obstruct
the view. He stated that the Highway Department seemed to be
pleased with it when he spoke with them, and he would like to see
it approved.
Mrs. Huckle asked if he wanted to include any conditions.
Mr. St. John suggested sticking with the statutory criteria in
granting or denying a variance, and looking at the question of
whether the highway in the future was going to take some of this
land was not one of those criteria. He stated that they already
had a given right-of-way and they had not been given any power to
withhold otherwise valid variances so that the highway would not
have to pay as much in the future if they condemn some more land
since that would amount to reserving future highway space.
