Dear Amelia,
Here is the additional information you requested regarding the
Albemarle Carriage Museum and the utilization of the second floor
of the Museum.
The second floor (attic) space is totally devoted to the museum
support functions of staff offices and storage areas.
UPPER STAFF OFFICES 4, 000 sq. ft.
Open office space allocated in the south attic area will provide
the Museum with additional staff office space required to operate
initially and with the necessary surplus space to allow for
eventual growth and flexibility. It will further provide the
Driving Center with an office for its managerial and administrative
needs.
Access to upper staff offices will be by staff elevator. Fire
stairs are located east and west.

The upper staff offices thus accommodate the planned needs for the
present while providing assurance that future requirements will
have space.
UPPER ARTIFACT STORAGE
A good museum will have more museum objects than it exhibits at
one time. The objects on public view often constitute less than
half of the collections. The second floor along with the storage
areas on the lower level of the museum will provide the necessary
space for these objects. These storage areas are environmentally
controlled which is necessary for the long-term preservation of the
obi ects.
EAST STORAGE 2, 523 sq. ft.
(Costumes, mannequins, and accessories)
This area will be flexibly configured to allow for its diverse
needs. The costumes and their accessories require vertical hanging
cabinets, drawers, cubbies for boots, open shelving for variously
shaped items (hats, gloves, parasols, handbags) .
Square footage allocations for West Artifact Storage are as
follows :
Mannequins : 1, 000 sq. ft.
Costumes & accessories : 1, 000 sq. ft.
Dressing Area: 523 sq. ft.
TOTAL : 2, 523 sq. ft.
NORTH STORAGE 2, 552 sq. ft.
(tack, objects for scenes, future growth)
This area will provide modular racks for tack, shelving for
miscellaneous objects, and bins for larger objects. Baskets,
trunks, props, and other artifacts used in the scenes will be
stored here.
An adjunct storage room at the west end of North Artifact Storage
provides an additional 1, 530 sq. ft.

PROPOSED ALBEMARLE CARRIAGE MUSEUM HEIGHT VARIANCE APPLICATION:
The height variance which is being requested by this application is
in conjunction with the special use permit, which has already been
granted the Albemarle Driving Centre Project. The code prescribed
height limit relates to the as-of-right uses in this zone. The
height of the building proposed is commensurate with the new use
(a museum open to the public) approved by the special use permit.
It should be noted that the major portion of the proposed building
is within the height limits of the existing zoning regulations.
The 'cuppola' and 'weathervane' , which are above the existing
height restrictions, are historically accurate to buildings of
this architectural style and character. The design of the museum
has relied on precedent within the Piedmont including the cuppolaed
Palladian Barn at Bremo in Fluvanna County.
In attempting to make the building compatible with its rural setting,
we have also used the precedence of historical carriage barns. The
cuppola/clock tower was a common element in these barns. Our cuppola,
as in the historical prototype, is used for ventilation.
It should also be noted that the top of a 35' high building set at
the center of a typical residential 5 acre lot would appear at
7.3° off the horizon at the property line. Due to the size of our
property, the ridge of the front roof appears at 1.4° off the horizon
at the property line and the cuppola is at 2.6° off the horizon.
