Additionally, the church provides services to a large number of visitors to Charlottesville and Albemarle County. It is the only Catholic Church in the area north of the City. Therefore it is vital not only to the Church, but to the community in general that the church be very accessible and well marked. The Church is located on a 12-acre site with an additional four acres being donated by Virginia Land Company. The Church buildings are not readily visible from Hillsdale Drive or elsewhere in the Branchlands PUD. Two entrances located approximately 700 ft. apart provide access to the grounds. Because of the terrain one is not visible from the other. There- fore a sign is necessary at each entrance. To minimize sign size the north entrance sign is proposed to be 12 sq. ft. and the south entrance sign is proposed to be 48 sq. ft. The 48 sq. ft. sign is necessary to provide easy visibility from the intersection of Hillsdale Drive and Branchlands Blvd. This will be a major traffic intersection with large commercial establishments probably located on all sides. This sign will be 400-500 ft. from the intersection and must be readily visible in this commercial environment. The smaller sign marks the secondary entrance to the church grounds. This entrance is only opened when large numbers of people are expected in the Worship Center, but must be marked since the main entrance is not visible from this second entrance.
