Steigman 120 Blithe Court "Birnam Wood" Charlottesville, Virginia 22901 A Re: Tax Map 61W2-01, Parcel P-4 Erosion and Bank Stability Dear Mrs. Steigman, After reviewing your back yard and deck, the following is my engineering opinion as to how you solved many existing problems. 1. The slope stability is much improved both from a soil consideration and vegetation. The area decked is situated immed- iately west of a two story townhouse with similar townhouses adjacent on both sides. To the west of the decked area are tall trees. The position of the deck places it in almost continuous shade. To establish vegetation would be almost impossible. 2. The deck provides a surface that completely dissipates the energy of rain and still allows for absorption without erosion. 3. The present arrangement protects the neighbors in that more absorption of moisture occurs and less sediment is migrating. In my opinion to remove any portion of the deck would create a worse situation regardless of different configurations or types of materials that might be used.
