November 17, 1989 iis___ R^_ TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: We hereby give Jacob Loeser and Stephen Thornton permission to erect a sign each on our property indicating the distance to their Eastern Log and Timber Home and Eaglecrest Christmas Tree Farm, respectively. We have indicated personally where on our property, next to the intersection of Rt. 631 and Rt. 706, we want the sign installed. h 1,i1 Us-e'4J1 Arthur Loeser Vicki Loeser Justification for Request The lay of the land does not allow a sign to be seen 75 feet from the intersection of Rt. 631 and 706 when going south on Rt. 631. We request a variance to allow us to position a sign that can only be seen when driving south on Rt. 631 in order to make the correct right turn onto Rt. 706 where our property is located. As one comes over a hill and turns to the left slightly, the intersection of Rt. 706 is only a hundred feet or so as seen on the enclosed plat. Mr. Thornton, who owns Eaglecrest Christmas Tree Farm, and Mr. Loeser, who represents Eastern Log and Timber Homes, has from time to time people visiting their properties. In December, families come to Eaglecrest Farm to choose and cut a Christmas Tree. The farm has had considerable improvement during the past eight years to make it a safe and attractive place for families to find a Christmas Tree. This area of the county is not well known, because it is a beautiful, narrow valley. Mr. Loeser has built a model log home on his property where he lives that he would like to show people who are interested in constructing a log home. Both properties have been significantly improved. Both properties have recently had new fences put up along Rt. 706, and both properties generally are among the most attractive along the road. Both owners are members of the Rt. 706 Neighborhood Watch, which Mr. Loeser has been instrumental in organizing. The Neighborhood Watch, incidentally, is responsible for cleaning the trash along the road. People have commented to both owners about the difficulty of finding their farms. A small sign for each property has been constructed by routing out the letters, staining the sign a redwood color, and painting the letters yellow. The signs are very attractive and have a rustic look like that found in parks. The signs are small (less than four square feet each), and Mr. Thornton properly contacted the Signing Department at Albemarle County before the signs were even constructed. After three telephone conversations, approval was given to build and mount the signs in November. Later in December, we were informed that a mistake had been made and that we needed to obtain a variance in order for the signs to be within 75 feet of the road. We put the signs where Mr. Arthur Loeser, the land owner, instructed us to put them and where no interference with a driver's view would occur. The signs have been successful in allowing people to find us.
