Exhibit C. Justification for Variance Request
Our current sign was intended to be a temporary sign when we first opened the store,
International Auto Sport. We now would like to install a permanent sign for the business.
International Auto Sport is a retail store providing high quality auto accessories for the
upscale car owner. We have tried to provide unique, exclusive products of superior quality
to the Charlottesville area. Products include custom-made car covers, custom seat covers,
specialty auto related clothing, gifts and books, aerodynamic styling (spoilers), halogen
driving lights, etc.
40,000 cars go by our building every day, but because of the building design and current
signage, people do not realize that we are a retail store. We also have problems with
customers and potential customers being able to find our store. This problem is true for
both northbound and southbound traffic, but for different reasons.
Northbound Problems
In the north -bound lane the current sign that we have was intended to be a temporary sign
for our initial opening. It is 4'x 6' (24 SgFt) and about 8' high. Customers cannot see this
sign in time to turn into the deceleration lane to access our driveway. There are four reasons
for this:
1. Traffic Speed vs Sign Size. The speed of traffic on 29 north in front of our
store is 55-65 miles per hour. For drivers to have enough time to react safely and
decelerate, they need to see the sign from a distance farther than would be required at
lower speeds. The distance required to react and decelerate from 60 mph is estimated to be
228-268 feet, according to the Defensive Driving Manual from the Department of Motor
Vehicles. The current sign is not readable until the driver is approximately 75 ft from the
driveway. (See Photo Exhibit D 1) We have a 400ft deceleration lane, but we have seen
drivers come to a screeching stop, then make a hard right turn, to keep from missing our
entrance.
2. Length of Business Name. Our current sign is too small to read the lengthy
name --International AutoSport. To fit the width of 13 letters (International) on this size
sign, the lettering is very small and condensed, making it difficult to read.
3. Sign Color. The current color scheme of the sign, brown with white lettering,
is difficult to see. Although it does match our brown building, it is not very visible because
it blends in too well to the surroundings. These colors are not highly visible to drivers.
4. Obstructions. Our neighbor, Oakwood Homes has mobile homes situated
within 15 feet of the highway, well forward of the zoning setback for permanent buildings.
This barrier makes it impossible for drivers to see our sign with a 50 ft. setback. Our sign
needs to be seen without obstruction of the mobile homes. There are also shrubs, trees etc.
obstructing the vision of the sign, until the driver is so close, they can not react safely.

Exhibit C. (page 2)
Southbound Problems
The Southbound lane has a topographical rise of about 30 ft, with 10 ft brush and trees in
the median. People in the Southbound lane never see our building. They cannot see it
before the rise, nor on the rise as they drive past the building. The first time they have an
opportunity to see the building, they are about 100 ft past it. The driver is coming down off
the rise into an intersection. To see our building, they have to turn their head 450 to the left.
This is not a safe move for a driver going 60 mph through an industrial intersection. We
have had several people tell us that they couldn't find us, drove by twice, etc.
To correct this problem we would need a sign to be 30 ft high. Our current signage
proposal does not request a 30ft sign and therefore will not help the problems with the
Southbound lane, but we'd at least like to solve the northbound problems.
We need to have a sign that is visible. To do this, given the variables discussed above, we
are asking for a variance for the size and setback requirements of the entrance corridor
zoning. We are asking for 27 sgft size for the graphic area of the sign face and a 1Oft set
back.
