requesting relief from Section 10.4 of the Albemarle County Zoning
Ordinance, as follows:
Variance to reduce the rear setback from 35 to 17 feet,
for an addition to an existing cottage.
A public hearing will be held by the Board of Zoning Appeals on
August 11, 1992, at 3 : 00 p.m. , in Meeting Room #7, Second Floor,

Dear Ms . Patterson:
I am writing to you regarding the hearing on May 12 , 1992
for my neighbor, Glenys Jones who is seeking a variance on the
setback between her property and ours .
My husband and I object. We disagree with the direction Mrs .
Jones is headed with the development of her property. We
talked with her at the site of the disputed addition and
suggested that she join those one room structures together
thereby reducing the number of buildings while at the same
time enlarging them without requiring additional land at the
rear. It is indeterminate whether Mrs . Jones had permission
to enlarge a cottage adjacent to the one in question which 6-250
violates the setback requirement.
Mrs . Jones can expand her buildings to the side and not the
rear. She is creating an unattractive situation for herself
and for us by ignoring the guidelines established by the
Department of Zoning .
Our property is unique and valuable and is eligible for
historical register status . We have endeavored to preserve it
and have made substantial improvements at great expense . We
consider the quality of Mrs . Jones ' additions to be intrusive
and not in our best interest or this- community$, Since our
arrival in 1982 , new single family homes have been built and
others are planned for lots along Rt . 738 . We expect the
Jones property to conformt e the properties of which it is an
