The bricks used to build all structures were sculpted from the distinctive red clay found in the vein that runs through the piedmont region. The scale and forms were inspired by his travels in Rome, and Andrea Palladio's Four Books of Architecture. The additions and improvements to the Albemarle Countertop Company building are designed with both global and local resources, in the interest of keeping with the authentic vernacular that Jefferson generated in and around Charlottesville. The existing northern portion of the building on Hydraulic Road is currently exposed CMU block. This small portion of the building will be clad in the deep gray Alberene Soapstone, mined from Schuyler, Virginia, 18 miles from the center of Charlottesville, the only quarried soapstone found in North America. The proposed southern addition will be clad in a white ceramic material made to depict the qualities of stone. This material, developed in Spain, is the first of its kind, and shows to be equally as sustainable as natural stone. Albemarle Countertop Company is not only interested in improving the Hydraulic Road Entrance Corridor, but is also excited to create an exhibition space for sustainable materials that can be found in our backyard, and across the world. Global t Local Albemarle Countertop Company (ACC) was started by native Virginian, Wes carter, in cnanottesvuie in 2UU3. Since then, Act; has gone from designing and fabricating small bathroom vanities and kitchens, to large entryway grand staircases, full fireplace mantels, and cladding whole rooms with 10'x 7' stone slabs. In 2015, ACC partnered with "Evolution Glass" to manufacture glass slabs made from 100% recycled bottle glass found solely at McIntire Recycling Center here in Charlottesville. Recycling and reusing bottled glass, and molding it into stunning countertops and tables that have been installed in homes both locally and in other parts of the United States. In 2015 ACC was chosen by Alberene Soapstone to be their preferred fabricator for their multidimensional material. To celebrate the locally quarried soapstone, the existing northern addition will be clad in this material, with the intent of giving the illusion of soapstone deposit emerging from the ground, paralleling the proposed soapstone sign for the company. The application of this material to the building and sign are intended to spark the curiosity and educate the Charlottesville resident and visitor about local resources, to act as a display of the possible uses of the material, and be authentic advertisement for ACC. The proposed southern addition, and remaining existing CMU walls will be clad in a 100% natural material made from clay, feldspar, silica and mineral oxides, called Neolith. This ceramic material has the aesthetic qualities of stone, in addition to being resistant to the impacts of UV rays from sunlight, acid rain, and pollutants. Neolith is made in Almazora (Castell6n), Spain, a geographic location that is internationally known as an enclave for the ceramics industry. Just as ACC is the preferred fabricator for Alberene Soapstone, they are also the preferred vendor for Neolith. Once again, the building itself be will an exhibition of both the local and the global materials ACC has the capacity to work with. A Visitor's Experience The Garden Entrance From the perspective of Hydraulic Road, the building facade is intended to act as a collage of stones. The vertical layout of the rectangular Neolith slabs expand the scale of the addition, making it seem monumental. The horizontality of the soapstone exaggerates that single height space, to root the small space in the earth. Once the visitor is parked, they enter the intimate garden space. This designed garden has 4 objectives: 1. To create a permeable ground where storm -water can be filtered easily, as opposed to the existing non -permeable asphalt. The redesign will take the 36'x 57' non permeable asphalt paving and transform it into a 2,052 square foot permeable garden. 2. To exhibit native, non-invasive plant species that act as both a sound and pollutant buffer to the building, in addition to contributing to the native ecosystem. 3. To create an intimate entrance to ACC, contrasting the large scale, fast and loud Hydraulic Road. 4. To be integral to the building design. As an extension of the facades, the pavers to walk on are stones found locally and globally. Along the edge of the building are sculptural masses of stone to sit on, and the planted form, in concert with the stone creates a sculpture garden, where the vegetation has a direct relationship with the existing and proposed structures, and changes dramatically from season to season to both echo and contrast the colors and forms of the building. w a m cr a z W U w O a ti cv Exhibition + Education + Transparency The redesign of ACC's exterior and interior showroom is conceptually driven by a gradient of transparency and education. The visitor can come to simply admire the beauty of stone and observe the fabrication process from a distance, or can be a customer who is an integral part of the design and fabrication process of an element of their home. Starting at the busy entrance corridor of Hydraulic Road, the native Ginko trees, parallel and frame the apertures of ACC's showroom, exhibiting the newest and most impressive slabs, like paintings in a gallery. As visitors park and enter the garden, they move through an outdoor exhibition space of stone and flora. Upon entering the front door to the showroom, the visitor is met with a framed view of the fabrication facility, exhibiting the most to date CNC stone fabrication technology, alongside ACC's long time staff of in house skilled stone fabricators. As you walk towards this aperture, on either side you can see the Park industries Fusion sawjet, Focus CNC saw, Titan CNC router, Destiny CNC router, Fastback line polisher, 2- 25hp paiatek air screw compressors, Various pneumatic hand polishers, 2- 50001b forklifts, and 2- 2 ton overhead shop cranes, all of which are top -of -the - line in stone working machinery. By exposing the fabrication process, this opening gives the visitor an experience beyond the typical, and gives them a better understanding of the stone forming, cutting, polishing and joining process. In 2005, ACC became a pioneer in Charlottesville by using a Beckart closed loop water treatment system, which enables them to recycle 100% of the water they use in fabrication. Standing in front of this aperture, to the left is the proposed exhibition showroom, a double -height gallery space that exhibits the curated stone slabs of that month. To the right is the design center, where ACC works with their clients to find exactly what kind of stone, edge, and surface the customer wants for the interior or exterior of their home. ACC includes their clients in all of the decision making processes, so they can act as educated local and global citizens to make the most sustainable decision for their projects. A Place for Sustainable Beauty The Hydraulic Road entrance corridor is an essential route for visitors and residents coming to and departing Charlottesville. ACC is committed to improving the aesthetic quality of this corridor, for both the vehicular and pedestrian traffic, to make this a space that people want to drive through and stop in. In addition to creating a gallery for geologic wonders, ACC aims to improve the local ecosystem by creating conditions that filter storm water outside, while also recycling water used in fabrication inside. By considering the hydrological network of the Rivanna River, James River, and Chesapeake Bay watershed and planting native vegetation, ACC hopes to play a part in generating systemic benefits throughout the region. w rr m z U w 3 O CE a_ -%.` N ,pJ 40L 11 J . e LO-9 I Z uoissiwqnS 9UV I phi oilneapl(H Cl8Z uotjeopgej pue ubise(] I OOV POKER LINE TELEPHONE LINE EXISTING Entrance + Office + Staff Break Room (894 sf) I Fabrication Shop (2730 sf) F *i 0000 GUARDRAIL 9 ! 1 ! 1 ! ! 1 ! 1 PARKING 1 1 1 1 ! 1 1 I ! ! Moisture clings only to the surface of soapstone and is unable to force its way inside, even under pressure. In tests conducted by the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland (research report number 174/80/BET), a result of just 0.08% was obtained for the effective porosity of soapstone. The porosity of good building stone can be 0-30%. Soapstone is structurally. dense. If moisture gets inside natural stone, it weakens the strength properties of efriibit-go., types of stone. If a stone gets wet unevenly, it can bend. Soapstone's high densitq'";. prevents moisture and chemicals from entering the stone, and it is therefore not prone to the previously -mentioned problems. NEOLITH SKYLINE is the Neolith facade line which offers more efficient solutions for th,. . most demanding of architectural projects.
