HomeMy WebLinkAboutARB201900022 Plan - Submittal (First) 2019-09-26This project is a renovation and expansion of the existing Flow Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen Dealership. With VW moving to another site, Audi will occupy the entire eastern portion of the building (that it now shares with VW) while Porsche Charlottesville will remain in its current west side location. As a result of their corporate headquarters request- ing branding upgrades, Audi and Porsche are both proposing an entire exterior.make-over. Renovating most of the existing building, the scope of work also includes new front facade additions meant to add space and natural light to the upgraded commercial spaces. In ad- dition, the new exterior design intent is to maintain the characteristics of each corporate branding identity, while at the same time create a cohesive building and one that is in keeping with the local character and Entrance Corridor Guidelines. The Audi portion of the building picks up from where it left off from the previously ARB approved but unbuilt design planned for the adjacent lot. The new proposal for the existing building's east (Audi) side is simi- lar in size and scale to the previous design and it employs a ground to roof glass wall running across the front facade that one could argue is contemporary but also having time honored classical elements. In composition, one can point to the buildings unadorned glass box as conveying the beauty of simple whole geometry, Further, architectural elements - such as the repetition of the glass and its repetitive slender vertical frmmework - evoke a strength of repetition and subtle rhythm one finds in more classical buildings. The Audi Entry is an elegant portal within the front facade. With a reduced palette of materials, a general theme is an uncluttered minimalism. The Porsche side of the renovation introduces a material palette estab- lishing its branding presence but also one that is compatible to Audi. The metal canopy complements the anodized glass frame of the Audi glass wall front and forms a suitable contrast to transparency of the glass. On the other hand, the 8'-0" glass front below the canopy helps maintain continuity between the 2 sides of the building. After our initial February 4, ' 19 work session with the ARB, Porsche made a number of design changes to address the Board comments. In response to the front metal canopy being 'too much a large blank front', the size of the building and canopy was reduced by shrinking B R w A R 11 I r E C T S the drive-thru from a 2 to 1 bay. This move helps scale the more solid Porsche side to a size smaller than the lighter transparent Audi side; as well as brings about less disturbance on an already tight site. Along the some vein, some comments were made about the oversized nature of the Porsche sign and thus it was reduced in scale to again better relate to the overall facade. Porsche also changed its storefont glass widths to a 4'-0 module for consistency to the Audi design. Further, the vertical connections of the curtain wall frame were changed from butt joints to anodized frame to again tie into the Audi framework. Of course, In this project we are not just looking at either side in isola- tion but rather designing a building that works as a whole; and stands on its own merit to be a positive addition to the Entrance Corridor. In this way, a design goal is finding ways that create compositional unity. Defining the 4'-0" glass width lends to this idea of consistency - main- taining a shared module of the field of glass that ties the two sides to- gether. Regarding the more general building composition, roof heights were modified to align and also more minor architectural elements were brought into alignment; such as the Porsche banding pattern with Audi's mid- horizontal frame. While a separation is requested by both dealerships to avoid blending of branding identities, we propose a sub- tle hyphen (a simple recessed, 2'-0" minimal dark gray metal panel) that works to marry the two styles while de-emphasizing the notion of separation. In developing a new building for this site, both Audi and Porsche hope to create a building that responds to the guidelines for the Entrance Corridor. While using modern design and materials, the intent is for tak- ing cues from the scale, texture and detail of the surrounding Entrance Corridor and the historic precedents of the larger community. Reduced BuildingSize ¢e and Site Work Reduce Porsche drive-thru to 1 Bay - thereby reducing size of drive ione and overall size of the building. A reduced canopy responds to the Board's comments of the 'blankness' of the original facade ( initial work session dated 2.4.19). 2. Modified Signage 'Porsche' Sign was reduced for better proportion to the overall facade. 3. Create Compositional Unit The Audi roof was lowered to align with Porsche. Other key elements of the 2 dealerships were brought into alignment to create a continuity across the front. 4. Crafted Connection between Both Dealerships While each dealership requires separation from each other- the design brings in a minimal 'hyphen' separation that downplays the change of design styles and provides a pause for change of materials. 5. Ground Plane Relationship to Buildin The front walk slopes with grade to provide a continuous ground plane emphaswng connection of the 2 building sides.
