*CULVERT NOTES:
1.
CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE SHOP DRAWINGS SIGNED BY A STRUCTURAL PE TO BE APPROVED BY
THE ENGINEER PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION FOR CULVERT 1 AND 2 CULVERTS AND ENDWALLS. DESIGN
FOR CULVERT AND ENDWALLS SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE RECOMMENDATIONS AND
REQUIREMENTS OF SECTION 6.5 OF THE REVISED GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING FOR THIS PROJECT.
2.
WALL BACKFILL AND BEDDING FOR BOX CULVERTS AND THE END WALLS SHALL CONFORM TO DETAIL
PB-1 OF THE 2016 VDOT ROAD AND BRIDGE STANDARDS. WALL BACKFILL SHALL BE VDOT CLASS I AND
SHALL BE COMPACTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE 2016 VDOT ROAD AND BRIDGE STANDARDS AND
COMPACTION REQUIREMENTS IN THE SPECIFICATIONS. THE BACKFILL SHALL EXTEND HORIZONTALLY
AT LEAST ONE-HALF THE STRUCTURE HEIGHT BEHIND THE BACK OF THE STRUCTURE, OR 36 INCHES,
WHICHEVER IS GREATER.
3.
A DRAINAGE LAYER (SUCH AS CLEAN STONE OR PREFABRICATED DRAINAGE BOARD) SHALL BE PLACED
BEHIND THE END WALLS AND COMPACTED WITH A HAND -OPERATED EQUIPMENT WITHIN 5 FEET OF THE
WALLS.
4.
UNDERCUT ANY SOFT ALLUVIAL SOILS BENEATH THE CULVERT BOTTOMS AND END WALLS TO REACH AN
ACCEPTABLE, STIFF SUBGRADE CULVERT AND END WALL SUPPORT. THE UNDERCUT SHALL EXTEND A
HORIZONTAL DISTANCE OF AT LEAST THE FOUNDATION (OR CULVERT BOTTOM) WIDTH OUTSIDE THE
FOUNDATION. AFTER UNDERCUTTING BENEATH THE CULVERTS AND END WALLS, EXPOSED SOILS AT
EXCAVATION BOTTOM SHALL BE EVALUATED BY THE GEOTECHNICAL OR HIS REPRESENTATIVE TO
CONFIRM THAT THE SUBGRADE IS ADEQUATELY STIFF.
5.
BACKFILLING OF UNDERCUT AREAS SHALL BE CONDUCTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE BEDDING
REQUIREMENTS OF DETAIL PB-1 OF THE VDOT ROAD AND BRIDGE STANDARDS, WHICH REFERENCES
SECTION 302 OF THE 2016 VDOT ROAD AND BRIDGE SPECIFICATIONS. THAT IS, THE BACKFILL SHALL
CONSIST OF VDOT NO. 25 OR NO. 26 AGGREGATE. IF STANDING OR RUNNING WATER IS PRESENT IN THE
EXCAVATION, VDOT NO. 57 STONE SHALL BE USED TO BACKFILL TO A HEIGHT OF AT LEAST 12 INCHES
ABOVE THE STANDING WATER LEVEL, AND THE VDOT NO. 57 STONE SHALL BE CAPPED WITH 4 INCHES
OF COMPACTED VDOT NO. 25 OR NO. 26 AGGREGATE. THE VDOT NO. 57 STONE SHALL BE WRAPPED IN A
SEPARATION GEOTEXTILE FABRIC THAT MEETS REQUIREMENTS DESCRIBED IN SECTION 245.03(C) OF
THE VDOT 2016 ROAD AND BRIDGE SPECIFICATIONS.
6.
FOUNDATION EXCAVATIONS FOR END WALLS SHALL BE EVALUATED BY THE GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER
OR HIS REPRESENTATIVE PRIOR TO REINFORCING STEEL AND CONCRETE PLACEMENT. THE
EVALUATION SHALL INVOLVE PROBING OF FOUNDATION BEARING SURFACES, ADVANCING SHALLOW
HAND AUGER BORINGS, AND DYNAMIC CONE PENETROMETER (DCP) TESTING. IF SOFT FOUNDATION
BEARING SOILS ARE ENCOUNTERED, THEY SHALL BE OVEREXCAVATED AND REPLACED WITH VDOT NO.
>
57 STONE.
7.
COUNTER SINK THE UPSTREAM AND DOWNSTREAM INVERTS OF CULVERTS 1 AND 2 6" BELOW THE
U
EXISTING STREAM BED ELEVATION PER VDOT DRAINAGE MANUAL SECTION 8.3.7.

C0.0: REVISION CLOUDS HAVE BEEN ADDED TO SHEET LIST FOR SHEETS THAT
HAVE CHANGED.
C5.2: CULVERT 1 ALIGNMENT HAS BEEN ADJUSTED TO ACCOMMODATE A
LESSER SKEW ON THE DOWNSTREAM END -SECTION. THIS WAS REQUESTED BY
VDOT AND THE CONTRACTOR FOR EASE OF CONSTRUCTION. THE LENGTH HAS
BEEN ADJUSTED TO BEST LINE UP WITH THE EXISTING STREAM AND FILL
SLOPES. THE END -SECTIONS OF CULVERTS 1 AND 2 HAVE BEEN UPDATED TO
MATCH THE STRUCTURAL DESIGN APPROVED BY VDOT STRUCTURES AND
BRIDGE DEPARTMENT. RIP -RAP AND DRAINAGE EASEMENTS HAVE BEEN
ADJUSTED ACCORDINGLY.
C8.4: CULVERT 1 LENGTH AND SLOPE HAVE BEEN UPDATED FOR A NEW
ALIGNMENT. INVERT IN OF CULVERT 2 HAS BEEN RAISED SO FINAL END -SECTION
DESIGN BEST MATCHES AND ROAD TIE IN 2:1 SLOPE.
