ARCHITECTURE — INTERIORS DS Tavern — Renovation Proposal From: FGS Design, LLC. 381 Park Avenue South, Suite 915 New York, NY 10016 To: The Architectural Review Board County of Albemarle Department of Community Development 401 McIntire Road Charlottesville, VA 22902 Dear Sirs and Madams, This project proposes a renovation to the historical DS Tavern on Ivy Road. DS Tavern is an essential part of Albemarle County and United States history, serving as a destination for westward settlers wrapped up in the idea and pursuit of Manifest Destiny at the end of the 18' and start of the 19' centuries. The working tavern was believed to have served patrons for the better part of half a century before being converted into a private residence. Since its construction the building, surrounding property and supplemental structures have experienced a number of alterations and changes in their program over the years. Currently, we the architects are tasked with removing some historically inappropriate additions to the original structure that do not accurately match its architectural style, replacing these sections with new spaces that will not deter from the tavern's appearance and architecture. This is all in service to renovate the building as new offices for a small company. The `hyphen', or area between the tavern and original kitchen shed will be replaced with a new structure and front porch that match the tavern's architectural style and exterior materials. The height of this new hyphen will be less than that of the tavern but taller than the kitchen shed. The original doors and windows on both the kitchen shed and tavern will remain and we will match the overall height, width and style of the windows and doors when adding these elements in the new structure, especially on the north elevation facing the parking lot and road. An old addition behind the tavern on the south side will be removed completely and replaced with a two story extension that matches the roof ridge, roof pitch, exterior materials and trim as that of the historic tavern it is intersecting. Windows on the west and south side of the new extension will match the overall height, width and style of the windows and doors of the original tavern. All doors in the new extension will be metal and glass and windows on the east side will be full floor to ceiling picture windows.
