RE: ARB-2017-104: UVA Primary Care Riverside - Sign
Dear Ms. Rutherford,
I have reviewed the above -noted sign applications. The following revisions are requested to make the
proposal consistent with the Entrance Corridor Sign Guidelines.
1. Revise the sign plan to specify the materials of each component including the logo cabinet sign.
Specify on the sign plan the material for the trim caps on the channel letters.
2. Revise the sign plan to provide a detail and section for the logo cabinet portion of the sign that
provides all of the information required for that sign including all the materials. Ensure that no
light spills outward from the top, bottom, sides or back of the logo cabinet portion of the sign.
3. Revise the sign plan to specify how the logo cabinet portion of the sign is mounted to the wall.
4. Revise the sign plan so that the white faces of the channel letters are not shown as red in the
detail/section views or revise the label on Page Number 2 to specify the color of white.
5. Revise the sign plan so that the "Black Block -out" background of the logo cabinet portion of the
sign is specified to be "opaque".
6. Revise the sign plan so that the background of the logo cabinet portion of the sign is "bronze" as
specified in the Comprehensive Sign Plan (see attached document).
7. Revise the sign plan to provide over all height of the two lines of channel letters combined.
8. Revise the sign plan to include the overall length and height of the two portions of the sign
together.
9. Revise the sign plan to include the width of the gap between the two portions of the sign.
10. Revise the sign plan so that the square feet of sign specified is for the combined signs and not just
the channel letters.
11. Revise the sign plan to reduce the height of the logo cabinet portion of the sign so that it is not
any taller, including the background, than the total height of the two lines of channel letters.
12. Revise the sign plan to provide information on the "sign area". The "sign area" is the brick area
above the supports for the canopies. Provide the height and widths of these areas and dimension
them on Page Number 1.
13. Revise the sign plan to show the clearance between the two portion of the signs and the edge of
the sign area.
14. Revise the sign plan to ensure that there is a minimum of 4" clear space above, below, and to the
sides of the signs.
15. Revise the sign plan so that the placement of the sign on the building establishes a unified
appearance with the existing signage. The Rhett's sign placement appears to be placed much
higher on the wall than the proposed placement for the UVA signs.
16. Revise the sign plan to dimension the placement and clearance of the signs within the "sign area"
and to show that the placement of the signs in the sign area meets the requirements.
17. Revise the photo simulation in the sign plan on Page Number 3 so that the resolution is improved
and it is possible to evaluate the placement of the signs in the "sign area" and in comparison to
the existing Rhett's sign. A PDF of the sign plan being sent to the reviewer may be beneficial in
accomplishing this.
18. Revise the illumination note on Page Number 2 to include the exact wording of the required note,
which is "The level of illumination provided by the LED lights will not exceed the illumination
produced by a single stroke of 30 milliamp (ma) neon."
Please respond by email within 15 days of the date of this letter indicating whether you will or will not
proceed with these revisions. Your decision to make the revisions will suspend the 60-day review period
associated with your original submittal. If you choose to complete the revisions, please email the revised
drawings to me. If you choose not to proceed with these revisions, staff will be unable to approve your
application. Failure to respond to this letter shall be presumed to be a request to proceed to action on the
application without further revisions.
