Hi Kristyn - I have reviewed your attached (current) sign proposal with Margaret Maliszewski. She agrees with me that a
remaining issue is the proposed aluminum material for the 8 foot tall sign pole cover (sign base).
Entrance Corridor Sign Guidelines state the following regarding proposed freestanding signs:
"Materials used in both the sign and support structures should be complementary. They should also support the
aesthetics of the building and /or complex being served by the sign, although a direct duplication is not necessary. It is
preferred that the base material match one of the primary building materials unless the design of the sign represents
itself as a freestanding element complementing the building."
The existing Schewel's building was constructed prior to when the Route 29 Entrance Corridor (EC) was established.
Because it does not have building materials representative of what the EC guidelines recommend, we believe a brick sign
base material either matching or complimenting brick in the nearby Kegler's freestanding sign would be appropriate. To
assist you, I have attached the approval letter for that sign indicating use of Old Va. Brick, Montpelier Colonial Series in
that sign base. To help illustrate what we envision would be appropriate, I have also attached the approved sign drawing
for the 12' tall Mark's & Harrison freestanding sign (440 Premier Circle), located on this same Route 29 Entrance
Corridor. That application was originally submitted with an aluminum pole cover and revised to the approved brick base
to meet guidelines.
The proposed planting (snap shot directly below) does not appear to be coordinated in terms of location and mature
size with the existing planting. The existing planting and the proposed sign location are shown on the Letter of Revision
currently under review (snap shot below). Japanese Aucuba reaches a mature size of 8' tall and 6' wide and Vernal
Witchhazel reaches heights in excess of 8'.

Hi Brent,
Please find attached the updated rendering and my response to your below points.
A sign that matches the Kegler's sign would look out of place and does not match with the existing Schewel
signage. My customer would like their sign to match their current building and signage. I also foresee visibility
issues at that suggested height being that the sign is a bit far back from the road and on a slight hill. The
proposed sign placement is on the opposite end of he parking lot from the Kegler's sign, so they will not be next
one another. The drawing attached with the three styles is very old and made before the permeant sign
placement was selected. I ask that the sign, as designed, be considered for approval.
I've attached a larger site map, which shows that the sign is outside of the easement. We will have the water
company mark the edge of the easement when we install.
See attached.

Kristyn - I have completed my review of your above -noted ARB sign proposal (attachment). The following revisions are
requested to make this sign proposal consistent with established Entrance Corridor Sign Guidelines.
1. Entrance Corridor Sign Guidelines encourage the use of monument style sign structures because they are of a
smaller scale that can be more fully integrated into the overall development. The close proximity of this proposal to
the existing Kegler's monument sign requires its shape, proportions and materials be compatible with the Kegler's
sign/sign structure. Revise the proposed sign type to a monument style compatible with the Kegler's sign structure
in shape, proportion and materials. For your convenience, a copy of the Kegler's sign approval, with sign specs called
out, is attached.
2. The site plan drawing included with this application is not legible and the sign location cannot be accurately
determined. Show the sign location on a site plan drawing clearly demonstrating that it meets required setbacks and
is not located within any utility easements. If proposed within an easement provide proof of the easement holder's
permission.
3. Entrance Corridor Sign Guidelines recommend the use of plantings (trees, shrubs and ground cover) to integrate the
freestanding sign into the overall landscape of the site. Revise this application to include such a planting plan.
4. Entrance Corridor Sign Guidelines require that all internally illuminated signs have an opaque background. Revise
this application to clearly indicate the use of a non -illuminated, opaque (zero transmission) sign background. Only
the text shall illuminate.
5. Include an original drawing date and a latest revision date on the sign drawing.
Please respond by email within 15 days of the date of this email indicating whether you will or will not proceed with these
revisions. Your decision to make the revisions will suspend the 60-day review period associated with your original
submittal. If you choose to complete the revisions, please email the revised drawings to me so we can wrap this up quickly.
If you choose not to proceed with these revisions, staff will be unable to approve your application. Failure to respond to
this letter shall be presumed to be a request to proceed to action on the application without further revisions.
If you have any questions about this action, please contact me as soon as possible. Your earlier communication with staff
regarding this proposal is below in this email chain.

Hi Jeffrey,
Do you have more information on what I can and cannot have for the Schewels monument sign? I don't want to propose
something my client cannot have.

Jeff, can you help Kristyn with the items you review for?
Kristyn, some very preliminary comments: I won't be able to approve the post -mounted sign. The close proximity of the
signs will require that the shade of red coordinate with the Kegler's sign; that the shape, proportions and materials of
the sign will need to be compatible with the Kegler's sign; and landscaping will need to be added for further
coordination.

Hi Margaret,
I am working with the Operations Manager of Schewel's Home off 29N (2030 Seminole Trail, Charlottesville, VA 22906 /
Rivanna Plaza) on a monument sign.
I'm trying to figure out exactly what he is allowed to have, but I am having trouble narrowing down the specifics. Do you
mind looking at the rendering attached and letting me know if any of these would fly? I would also like to know what he
is allowed to have as far as size, colors, materials, sign height, etc. Please and thank you!
