RE: ARB-2020-76: Flow Audi Porsche VW Mazda (TMP 07800-00-00-00700)
Dear Mr. Timmerman,
The Albemarle County Architectural Review Board reviewed the above noted item at its meeting on
Monday, September 21, 2020. The Board took the following actions.
Regarding the site plan and architectural design:
The ARB unanimously approved the request, pending staff administrative approval of the following
conditions:
1. Provide glass samples for review.
2. Revise fixtures D1, 2, 3, 4, 8 and 9 so that illumination at the ground does not exceed 20 fc.
3. Provide documentation from ACSA that the proposed frontage landscaping is
acceptable.
Regarding the Comprehensive Sion Plan:
The ARB unanimously approved the request, pending staff administrative approval of the following
conditions:
1. Consider revising the CSP to require alignment of primary signs on the Flow/Mazda building
(not including the sign marking the service bay).
2. Revise the size limitations criterion to note that sign sizes are also subject to EC sign
guidelines requirements, which could result in signs smaller than ordinance maximums.
3. Revise the CSP to note that the maximum number of colors used for individual signs and for
signs in close proximity to each other is three.
4. Delete the note reading, "actual tenant signs will reflect individual tenant identity through
shape, font, etc." OR supplement the note with this text: "subject to EC guidelines regarding
size, color, proportion, etc."
5. Note that coordination of freestanding sign design, and tenant panels within those signs, will
be required.
6. Include the height of each sign band in the CSP drawings.
7. The maximum number of colors used for individual signs and for signs in close proximity to
each other is three.
8. Revise the CSP to limit illumination of letters to a single type and illumination of graphics
to include face lit or reverse lit illumination.
9. Note that an opaque background will be required for the VW sign as currently illustrated
if it is internally illuminated.
Please provide:
1. Revised drawings addressing each of these conditions. Include updated revision dates on
each drawing.
2. A memo including detailed responses indicating how each condition has been satisfied. If
changes other than those requested have been made, identify those changes in the memo
also. Highlighting the changes in the drawing with "clouding" or by other means will facilitate
review and approval.
3. The attached 'Revised Application Submittal' form. This form must be returned with your
revisions to ensure proper tracking and distribution.
When staffs review of this information indicates that all conditions of approval have been met, a
Certificate of Appropriateness may be issued.
