Wayne Cilimberg 401 McIntire Road Charlottesville, VA 22902 Dear Wayne: Attached is a letter from Ed Lay regarding the structures on the North Fork property. This information had been requested as a component of our Comprehensive Plan Submission. Our intentions are to incorporate the structures as Professor Lay recommended, in order to retain some historic continuity of the plantation complex. Sincerely, Tim R. Box 9023 Charlottesville, Virginia 22906 Dear Mr. Rose: From a visual inspection of "Morven" with your staff and an historical survey of the Birckhead family who resided there, it would seem that certain historical features might be incorporated into a comprehensive plan for the University's North Fork Business Park. At least two nineteenth-century members of the Birckhead family who lived there were medical doctors. As you know, most of the buildings there are dilapidated and beyond restoration, but retaining some of this material culture into a new development not only would add to the historic memory of the site but also would show a concern for local history on the part of the Foundation. As per your request for suggestions, I offer the following. Features on the site that are still salvageable are the cemetery, the ice pit house, the stone chimneys of the burned house, possibly the brick chimneys of the frame house, and the boxwood allees. The ice pit is particularly of interest since so few remain and since this particular one with its stone interior wall is so intact. These building remnants could be retained in a park -like atmosphere along with the footprints of the house foundations which would retain some historic continuity of the plantation complex and add to the ambiance of the development.
