ALBEMARLE COUNTY NOTES FOR EROSION CONTROL
ES-1: Unless otherwise indicated, all vegetative and structural erosion and sediment control
practices will be constructed and maintained according to minimum standards and
specifications of the Virginia Erosion and Sediment Control Handbook and the Virginia
Regulations VR 625-02-00 erosion and sediment control regulations.
ES-2: The plan approving authority must be notified one week prior to the pre -construction
conference, one week prior to the commencement of land disturbing activity, and one
week prior to the final inspection.
ES- J.' All erosion and sediment control measures are to be placed prior to or as the first step
in clearing.
ES-4: A copy of the approved erosion and sediment control plan shall be maintained on the
site at all times.
ES-5: Prior to commencing land disturbing activities in areas other than indicated on these
plans (including but not limited to, off -site borrow or waste areas). The contractor shall
submit a supplementary erosion control plan to the owner for review and approval by the
Plan approving authority.
ES-6: The contractor is responsible for installation of any additional erosion control measures
necessary to prevent erosion and sedimentation as determined by the plan approving
au th orl ty.
ES-7: All disturbed areas are to drain to approved sediment control measures at all times
during land disturbing activities and during site development until final stabilization is
achieved.
ES-8: During dewatering operations, water will be pumped into an approved water filtering
device.
ES-9: The contractor shall inspect erosion control measures periodically and after each run-off
producing rainfall event. Any necessary repairs or cleanup to maintain the effectiveness
of the erosion control devices shall be made immediately.
EROSION AND SEDIMENT CONTROL MEASURES
Safet,V Fence (3.01)
A protective barrier consisting of polyethylene web secured to a conventional metal post
driven into the ground a minimum of 18 inches. Posts should be spaced at 6-foot
centers. Used to prevent undesirable use of an erosion control measure by the public. To
prevent access to an erosion control measure.
Specific Application: Safety fence will be used around all sediment traps and basins.
Paved Wash Rack Construction Entrance (3.02)
A seventy (70) foot paved section shall be installed at the point of vehicular ingress and
egress on the construction site. This paved area shall be used for washing sediment from
vehicles exiting the site. Where sediment is transported onto a public road surface, the
road shall be cleaned thoroughly of the end of each day. Sediment shall be removed from
the roads by shoveling or sweeping and transported to a sediment control disposal area.
Street washing shall be allowed only after sediment is removed in this manner. This
provision shall apply to individual subdivision lots as well as larger land disturbing activities.
Specific Application: A construction entrance shall be placed at the end of existing
Boulders Drive.
cSilt Fence (3.05)
A temporary sediment barrier consisting of synthetic filter fabric stretched across and
attached to supporting posts and entrenched. Used to prevent sediment from leaving the
site. To decrease the velocity of sheet flows.
Specific Application: Silt fence will be used at the foot of the cut / fill slopes.

A temporary sediment filter around a storm inlet or curb inlet, in order to prevent
sediment from entering storm drainage systems prior to permanent stabilization of the
disturbed area.

A temporary ridge of compacted soil constructed at the top or base of a sloping
disturbed area. Used to divert sediment -laden runoff from a disturbed area to a
stabilized outlet.
Specific- Application: Diversion Dikes will be used to divert runoff away from the disturbed
areas of construction.

outlets of pipes or paved channel sections. To prevent scour of stormwater outlets and

aL TemRorary Seeding®(3.31)
The establishment of a temporary vegetative cover on disturbed areas by seeding with
appropriate rapidly growing annual plants. This protects slopes exposed during construction
until permanent vegetative cover can be established Temporary seeding will apply to all
areas on the site that will not be brought to final grade for periods of thirty (30) days to
one year. Selection of the appropriate seed mixture depends upon the time of year it is
to be applied (See schedule on E&S details sheet.)
Specific Application: Temporary seeding shall be applied to all denuded areas prior to
permanent stabilization in the form of either hardscope or permanent seeding. Temporary
seeding shall be used on all fill slopes and diversions.

Establishment of perennial vegetative cover by planting seed on rough -graded areas that
will not be brought to final grade for a year or more or where permanent, long-lived
vegetative cover is needed on fine -graded areas.

Reducing surface air movement of dust during land disturbances, demolition or construction
activities in areas subject to dust problems in order to prevent soil loss and reduce the
presence of potentially harmful airborne substance.

After construction is completed, a// disturbed areas of the site will be limed, fertilized, and seeded as per
current VDOT standards. This shall conslst of the following,
Topsoil - 2" depth
Lime - 2 tons/acre
Fertilizer - 600 lbs./acre of 15-30-15
Seed - Ernst 5311 conservation seed mix - Ernmx-114 (45 lbs./acre pennlawn creeping red fescue, 37.5
lbs/acre argile ken tacky bluegrass, 37.5 lbs./acre park ken tacky bluegrass, 15 lbs./acre annual ryegrass & 15
lbs./ocre pleasure perennial ryegrass) or acceptable alternate.
After these areas are stabilized, they will be mowed and maintained on a regular basis.
MAINTENANCE
/n general, al/ erosion and sediment control measures will be checked daily and after each significant rainfall.
Specific attention will be given to the following items:
A. Sediment basins and/or traps will be cleaned and maintained in accordance with the Virginia Erosion
& Sediment Control Handbook. Sediment traps will be checked regularly for sediment cleanout.
B. All gravel outlets will be checked regularly for sediment buildup that will prevent proper drainage. If
the gravel is clogged by sediment, the gravel will be removed and cleaned, or it will be replaced
C. All silt fence barriers will be checked regularly for undermining or deterioration of the fabric and
repaired as required. Sediment shall be removed when the level of sediment deposition reached
half way to the top of the barrier.
D. All seeded areas will be checked regularly to see that a good stand is maintained. Areas should be
fertilized and reseeded as needed,
DISPOSITION OF TEMPORARY MEASURES
All temporary erosion and sediment control measures, including the temporary sediment basins, shall be
removed within 3O days after final site stabilization is achieved or after the temporary measures are no
longer needed, unless otherwise authorized by the local program administrator. Trapped sediment and other
disturbed soil areas resulting from the disposition of temporary measures shall be permanently stabilized to
prevent further erosion and sedimentation.
STORMWA TER MANAGEMENT
The stormwater and runoff from the site will be captured and carried in a permanent stormwater
management pond located on site. This pond is sized for water quality and water quantity. This pond shall
remain permanent and operational until such time that the expansion below is complete. At that time, the
adjacent property shall have a storm water pond in place and the stormwater run-off from this site shall
ouffall to that pond.

THE SUBJECT PROPERTY /S LOCATED OFF OF BOULDERS ROAD, JUST EAST OF ROUTE 29 NORTH, IN ALBEMARLE
COUNTY. THIS SITE IS CURRENTLY VACANT, GRADUALLY SLOPING DOWNWARD TOWARD THE SOUTHWEST, AS
SHOWN ON SHEET E-1. WOODED AREAS EXIST IN THE SOUTHERN PORTION OF THE PROPERTY AND EX/STING
DIRT ROADS TRAVERSE THE NORTHERN AND SOUTHEAST CORNERS.
ADJACENT AREAS:
THE PROPERTY IS SURROUNDED ON ALL SIDES BY VACANT LAND ZONED RA (RURAL AREAS). THE EXISTING
NG/C FACILITY IS LOCATED WEST OF THIS SITE. EXISTING BOULDERS ROAD, WHICH WILL BE EXTENDED WITH THIS

7. ONCE ALL THE EROSION CONTROL ITEMS HAVE BEEN INSTALLED AS SHOWN ON THE EROSION CONTROL PLAN
AND THE COUNTY INSPECTOR HAS APPROVED THE EROSION CONTROL MEASURES, THE CONTRACTOR CAN CLEAR
AND GRADE THE SITE. STABILIZATION MEASURES SHALL BE APPLIED TO EARTHEN STRUCTURES SUCH AS DAMS,
DIKES, AND DIVERSIONS IMMEDIATELY AFTER iN•STALLATION. ALL SEDIMENT LADEN RUN-OFF SHALL BE DIRECTED

15. MAINTAIN ALL EROSION CONTROL MEASURES AS SPECIFIED /N THE VIRGINIA EROSION AND SEDIMENT CONTROL
