Mary -Ann,
Please see the response from VDOT below. It states that your entrance is regularly maintained and currently in good shape per their
standards. It also states that "other records for permits were purged for this time [period]." Therefore, I would strongly suggest that
you hold onto this email for the future, as it may be the only record available that shows VDOT's review. 1 will add it to our records
here and I will copy you on the entail to Sherri that confirms your zoning approval to participate on the Monticello Artisan Trail.
I also discussed a variety of ways to get off -site signage for the Bamswallow that included agricultural exemptions, but it turns out
that only our normal special use permit application process would be correct under the County Code. In this case, each sign would
cost about S 1,000 to go before the Board of Zoning Appeals (application fee, legal advertisements, and abutting owner notice are
necessary). I think you mentioned this would be cost -prohibitive, but please let me know if you're still interested.
Thanks for your patience over the past couple weeks and please let me know if you have any questions.

Good Afternoon J.T.,
I took a look at the Barn Swallow Entrance on Friday and it appears to have been built when the construction project re-
aligned the road and the new bridge was built across the rail road tracks and has been the same ever since. The entrance
is about 34' wide and has a crushed stone entrance that is maintained and in good shape. This is the only thing that I
could find in the route file records about work on this road. All the other records for permits were purged for this time and
we did not have a computer program in place until late 2000 that kept permanent records. I am not sure how much traffic
they generate and if it would be worth while making them pave the entrance which is all that I can see would need to be
completed if they were having a problem with the entrance. Let me know if I can help further.
Thanks,
Dennis Seale

Hi Mary -Ann,
I will call VDOT tomorrow to follow-up with my earlier requests for their info. In the mean
time, here's some info to consider:
Chapter 18-4.15.2(1.1):
Agricultural product sign: The term "agricultural product sign" means a sign or signs
identifying the produce, crops, animals or poultry raised or quartered on the property, or
identifying farm sales, a farm stand, a farmers' market or a farm winery. (Added 3-16-05;
Amended 5-5-10)
Is there any chance the flowers come from on -site?
Alternatively, your store could qualify as a "farm stand" (and therefore be eligible for the sign
exemption) if either of you would consider yourselves to be engaged in "production
agriculture" in Albemarle County. The term "production agriculture" is not defined in the
ordinance, so please let me know if you do any kind of agricultural activity locally that results
in you selling something and I'll see if we can make it fit!
Thanks,
J.T. Newberry
