Looking at the sign guidelines, most of the precedents included there are a similar scale/height to the text. I'm concerned that approving a logo so much larger than the text would set an unfortunate precedent for the allowable scale of graphics. Are there approved and installed examples of similarly scaled logos to that of the original proposal elsewhere in the county? So that this application doesn't rely solely on my opinion, I think it makes sense for the Board to consider the proposal. I'm forwarding the applicant's response to our suggestion to reduce the size of the Aldi logo. Would you want to take a look and let me know your thoughts? Thanks. Margaret, Our client was disappointed to review the chain of emails, given that: -the proposed sign meets county zoning ordinance requirements -the large logo is appropriate for such a long facade/corner anchor tenant -the proposed sign is a very long way away from an Entrance Corridor -Aldi has already substituted their preferred sign for the County-preferred channel letters -Aldi has been amenable to recommended building design revisions With that in mind, our client requested we render the options from the Entrance Corridor, believing a bit of context would help see the impact of the variations. Please find the renderings attached (the logo in the "Board Revision" is 60% the size of the"As Proposed"). After review from the Entrance Corridor, it may warrant more discussion? Dade felt that the board did not want to do a full review of the sign, but he would like me to give the board an update under"other business" once the logo is reduced in scale. Please let me know if you have questions. Thanks. I think the sign guidelines really have made a positive impact on the corridors, but I realize that discussing the intricacies of guidelines interpretation and balancing flexibility and consistency can make for some uncomfortable situations. If you haven't already paid fees for the sign application (from what I can see in CountyView, it looks like you haven't) I suggest you wait to make that formal submittal until your building permit for the renovation is under review. I've only taken a quick look at the new sign design, but I noticed that the logo is quite a bit taller than the channel letters. The guidelines discourage over-scaled logos. It is possible to interpret the size of the logo as over-scaled in relation to the Aldi letters. Otherwise, the sign type is fine. I'll run this by Dade and see how he would like to proceed, and I'll let you know what he says. Have a great weekend. I know the Board requested to see it again, but I thought maybe since we went to the channel letters as suggested, that could mitigate the need for the Board review. I owe you and the Board an apology for the Aldi sign discussion at last month's work session. I was in both "advocating for my client" mode and also "here's where I'm coming from" mode that took the conversation off track-and realized 3 that probably wasn't appreciated by either the Board or staff. Please pass along lily sentiments to the Board, as appropriate.
