Dear Bill Fritz,
On behalf of Albemarle County School Board, we offer the following responses and plan
revisions to comments dated July 16, 2021. Our Responses are in bold italic text below
each comment.
Albemarle Fire Rescue — Howard Lagomarsino

1) There needs to be access to all sides of the structure within 150 ft of the fire
apparatus access route. The current configuration suggests the long axis of the
modular is 64 ft and the short axis is roughly 24 ft. - based on this, the current
configuration of the parking and proposed firelane provides this requirement. If
different dimensions exist for the building, please provide the measurements of the
exterior walls of the unit to ensure compliance.
Please note, the long axis of the modular is 120', the short axis 64.' There will be
access to all sides of the structure. Exterior dimensions for the new building are
now included in the plan, sheet C2.0.
2) Please provide a note on the plan of the calculated ISO fire flow rate for the
modular building.
The modular building requires a Fire Flow of 1,500 gpm. Calculations can be found
on sheet CO.1.

3) 1 see an existing hydrant at the parking area but on the plans as presented to me, I
can not conclusively calculate the distance from the hydrant to the building and
without the ISO fire flow I cannot determine the spacing of hydrants or number of
hydrants required. Please clarify on the plans the distance from this hydrant to the
modular unit (furthest spacing distance permitted is 500 ft with no building more
than 250 ft from a hydrant, however as fire flow requirement increases, the spacing
is closer).
Because the distance from the nearest hydrant to the modular unit is in excess of
250; the modular building shall include a fire suppression sprinkler system which
shall be approved by the Fire Marshall prior to the Certificate of Occupancy being
issued.
4) Please provide a note on the plan of the fire flow available from the hydrants.
The existing hydrant has been labeled with the calculated flow rate on sheet C2.0,
worksheet is included on sheet CO.1.
5) Please provide signage to alert that there is no parking at the end of the parking
lot to ensure no one blocks the entrance to the portion of the fire lane to be
constructed and to indicate no parking the length of the fire lane to construct itself.
Signs have been added to the plan at the entrance to the new fire lane to prevent
its obstruction.
