MITIGATION WITHIN THE 100' BUFFER WILL CONSIST OF 6,000 SF OF MEADOW AND 6,000 SF OF CANOPY COVER. AN ADDITIONAL 1,200 SF OF THE BANK WILL BE REVEGETATED WITH LIVE STAKES. 4. ALL SITE PLANTING OF TREES AND SHRUBS SHALL BE ALLOWED TO REACH AND BE MAINTAINED AT, MATURE HEIGHT. THE TOPPING OF TREES IS PROHIBITED. SHRUBS AND TREES SHALL BE PRUNED MINIMALLY AND ONLY TO SUPPORT THE OVERALL HEALTH OF THE PLANT. SITE PREPARATION AND SEEDING NOTES PESTICIDE APPLICATION 1. GOAL IS 98% PLANT KILL TO PREPARE SITE FOR NEW PLANTING. CONTRACTOR TO VERIFY THE SITE IS ADEQUATELY FREE OF PERNICIOUS WEEDS PRIOR TO SEEDING. 2. SEE PROJECT WORK SCHEDULE FOR PESTICIDE APPLICATION RECCMMENDATIONS. 3. IF SUBSTANTIAL PLANT MATERIAL REMAINS ON THE SURFACE FOLLOWING A FULL KILL BY HERBICIDES, A CLOSE MOWING MAY BE NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE GOOD SEED -TO -SOIL CONTACT. 4. ALL PESTICIDE APPLICATIONS AND TREATMENTS SHALL FOLLOW THE CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT GUIDELINES. PROJECT SEEDING 1. COMBINE THE MEADOW, ANNUAL, AND NURSE CROP SEED MIXES A, B, & C OUTLINED BELOW, AND INSTALL WITH DRILL SEEDING EQUIPMENT ACCORDING TO SEED SUPPLIER RECOMMENDATIONS. INSTALL IN THE MEADOW AREAS SHOWN ON THE SITE PLAN. APPLY SEED MIXES AT THE PURE LIVE SEED (PLS) RATES LISTED BELOW: A) MEADOW SEED MIX: AT 20-LBS PER ACRE. SEE MEADOW SEEDING SCHEDULE. B) ANNUAL FLOWER SEED MIX: (ERNST #167 OR APPROVED EQUAL) AT 3-LBS PER ACRE. C) GRAIN RYE NURSE CROP: AT 30-LBS PER ACRE. 2. INSTALL LAWN GRASS SEED IN AREAS AS SHOWN ON SITE PLAN. GRASS SEED MIX SHALL BE BUNCHING, NON-RHIZOMATOUS FINE FESCUE MIX. AFTER SEEDING, COVER GRASS AREAS WITH CLEAN STRAW, AND APPLY CHEMICAL TACKING PRODUCT TERRA TACK OR APPROVED EQUAL. APPLY SEED MIX AT 6-LBS PER 1000 SQ FT. LIVE STAKE NOTES 1. INSTALL STAKES DURING THEIR DORMANCY (LATE FALL TO EARLY SPRING) PER ERNST SEED SPECIFICATIONS. 2. DO NOT ALLOW THEM TO DRY OUT. SOAKING BEFORE PLANTING SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASES SURVIVAL AND GROWTH RATE. 3. DRIVE A PILOT HOLE IN FIRM SOIL, PLANTING AT RIGHT ANGLES (BUDS ORIENTED UP) WITH AT LEAST TWO-THIRDS OF ITS LENGTH UNDERGROUND. 4. PLANT STAKES RANDOMLY OR 3' APART ON TRIANGULAR SPACING. 5. TAMP THE SOIL DOWN AROUND THE CUTTINGS AND WATER. 6. IF A LONG DRY SPELL OR HOT WEATHER IS EXPECTED AFTER PLANTING, IRRIGATION MAY BE WARRANTED. 7. CONTRACTOR SHALL REVISIT SITE LATE SUMMER AFTER PLANTING TO EVALUATE SURVIVAL RATE OF LIVE STAKES. IF THE SURVIVAL RATE IS BELOW 50% ADDITIONAL LIVE STAKE SHALL BE INSTALLED IN ORDER TO REACH AT LEAST THE 50% THRESHOLD. 5. IN THE EVENT OF A PLANT QUANTITY DISCREPANCY BETWEEN THE SCHEDULE AND THE PLANS, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL FOLLOW THE PLANS 6. TREE AND SHRUB PLANTING PIT SOIL SHALL CONSIST OF SCREENED HIGH QUALITY, NATIVE TOPSOIL AS APPROVED BY THE ARCHITECT AND ENGINEER. TREE PIT DEPTH SHALL BE 1-1/2 TIMES ROOT BALL DEPTH. THE PIT DIAMETER SHALL BE 5 TIMES ROOT BALL DIAMETER 7. CONTRACTOR SHALL APPLY 4-INCHES OF TOPSOIL TO ALL PLANTING BEDS SHOWN ON THE PLANS. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL THEN POWER -TILL THE PLANTING BEDS TO A MINIMUM DEPTH OF 12-INCHES TO PREPARE THE PLANTING AREA. 8. ALL PLANTING AREAS/BEDS SHALL RECEIVE 2" OF DOUBLE -GROUND HARDWOOD BARK MULCH. SEE LIMITS SHOWN ON THE PLANS. 9. CONTRACTOR SHALL STAKE ALL PLANTS IN THE FIELD FOR ARCHITECT AND OWNER WRITTEN APPROVAL PRIOR TO INSTALLATION. 10. THE LANDSCAPE CONTRACTOR SHALL CONTACT "MISS UTILITY" AND HAVE ALL PUBLIC AND PRIVAT UTILITIES MARKED PRIOR TO BEGINNING ANY CONSTRUCTION WORK. ESTABLISHMENT REQUIREMENTS - DRILL SEEDING 1. MEADOW SEED MIX SEEDING TO BE DONE WITH A DRILL SEEDER. ALL DRILLS SHOULD BE EQUIPPED WITH A CLOSING OR PACKING WHEEL THAT FOLLOWS THE SEED PLACEMENT. A SPECIAL SEED BOX IS REQUIRED FOR HANDLING SMALL OR FLUFFY SEED LIKE THAT OF MANY WILDFLOWERS AND NATIVE GRASSES. DRILLS THAT CAN METER FLUFFY SEED, SUCH AS THAT OF LITTLE BLUESTEM, BIG BLUESTEM AND INDIANGRASS, NEED SPECIAL AGITATION AND METERING EQUIPMENT TO HANDLE THESE SEEDS. DRILL SEEDING EQUIPMENT TO FOLLOW GUIDELINES OF SEED SUPPLIER. 2. DRILL SEEDER TO BE ADJUSTED TO PLACE SEED 1/4"-1/2" DEEP INTO A FIRM SEEDBED. CALIBRATING A DRILL OR BROADCAST SEEDER DEPENDS ON SEED BULK DENSITY AND REQUIRED APPLICATION RATES. MANY NATIVE AND NATURALIZED SEED MIXES CONTAIN A MIX OF LARGE FLUFFY SEED AND SMALL DENSE SEED. SOME DRILLS HAVE SPECIAL SEED BOXES THAT CAN METER LARGE FLUFFY SEED. SEEDER MAY NEED FURTHER CALIBRATION BY ADDIMG A BULKING AGENT TO SEED (SUCH AS KITTY LITTER) TO CREATE AN EVEN FLOW OF SEED. ADD 40-50 LB OF A BULKING AGENT TO 10 LB OF SEED AND CALIBRATE FOR 50-60 LB PER ACRE (1 LB BULKING AGENT TO 1/4 LB OF SEED PER 1,000 SQ FT). DIVIDE THE SEED INTO PROPORTIONAL AREAS OF THE PROJECT. START SEEDING AT A LOWER RATE THAN THE CALCULATED RATE. CONTACT SEED SUPPLIER FOR MORE INFORMATION ON RECOMMENDED SEEDING PRACTICES. 3. IF POSSIBLE, PLAN ON SEEDING HALF OF THE SEED IN ONE DIRECTION AND MAKE A SECOND PASS WITH THE REMAINING HALF OF THE SEED IN A DIRECTION PERPENDICULAR TO THE FIRST DIRECTION. A DRILL SEEDER GENERALLY HAS AN 8' MINIMUM WIDTH AND CONTAINS A SEED HOPPER CAPABLE OF SEEDING A 6' WIDTH AND ROW SPACING OF APPROXIMATELY 7".
