Dear Mr. MoCue:
The following resolution was passed by the Albemarle County
Planning Commission at its December 10, 1953 meetings
"The Planning Commission indorses the ideas of the group pro-
posing to locate the Blind School in Albemarle County on the state owned
land off Route 29, South of the City of Charlottesville. They recommend
that the Board of Supervisors urge and encourage the location of the
school here."

MINUTES OF THE MARCH 11, 1954 MEETING
OF THE ALBEMARLE COUNTY PLANNING COMMISSION
The meeting was called to order by Charles Barham, Jr., Chairman at
In addition to Mr. Barham, the following members were present: Mr. C.
Nelson Beck, Dr. McLemore Birdsong, A. Gaines Fray, Floyd E. Johnson, secretary
protem, Mrs. Fred C.Liady, Cecil Maupin, M. Maupin Pence, E. D. Tayloe, and
Downing L. Smith, Commonwealth Attorney.
The minutes of the December 10, 1953 meeting were read and approved.
Mr. Pence reported on efforts to locate dump sites and requested suggest-
ions from members of the commission. Mr. Beck suggested the use of abandoned road
cuts and pointed to one on the road between Simeon & Milton.
The secretary was instructed to write the Civic Improvement Committee
of the Chamber of Commerce sponsoring the "Clean Up Week" for Charlottesville,
requesting them to work on the approaches to the City as well as the City proper.
Dr. Birdsong moved that a committee be formed to explore the possibilities
of an industrial survey for Albemarle County. The following committee was appointed
by Mr. Barham: C. Nelson Beck, Chairman, McLemore Birdsong, Floyd E. Johnson,
Members; Charles Barham and S. S. Clark, ex-officio members.
The following motion by Mrs. Fred Liady and seconded by Mr. Cecil Maupin
was passed. "Be it resolved that the Board of Supervisors be requested to thank
the Peoples National Bank for their contributions to the beautification of the
Route 250 By-pass through the planting of evergreens and flowering shrubs along the
right of way of said road"
The secretary was instructed to investigate 'what progress has been made
by the City on stream pollution.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

OF THE ALBEMARLE COUNTY PLANNING COMMISSION
The meeting was called to order by Charles Barham, Jr., Chairman, at
In addition to Mr. Barham, the following members were present: Mr. C.
Nelson Beck, Dr. McLemore Birdsong, A. Gaines Fray, Floyd E. Johnson, Mrs. Fred C.
Liady, Cecil Maupin, William T. Stevens, E. D. Tayloe, M. Maupin Pence, County
Executive, and S. S. Clark, Secretary.
Others present were: Mr. E. H. Bain, Member of the Albemarle County Board
of Supervisors; Downing L. Smith, Commonwealth Attorney; C. P. Spellman, Director of
Area Development of the Virginia Electric and Power Company; and W. Wright Harrison
and Randolph H. Perry of the Charlottesville and Albemarle Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Barham appointed Mr. William T. Stevens to work with Mr. Beck's committee
on the Industrial Sites Survey.
Mr. C. P. Spellman, representing the Virginia Electric and Power Company, .
briefed the commission members on the industrial surveys produced by his office and
informed the commission that Albemarle County was fifth on their list, and that pro-
bably they would be able to start work on an area survey for Albemarle and Charlottes -
villa by September, 1954.
The Planning Commission members, after discussing the benefits of such a
study, voted unanimously for the survey as presented by Mr. Spellman.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:30 P.M.

MINUTES OF THE DECEMBER 9, 1954 MEETING OF THE
ALBEMARLE COUNTY PLANNING COMMISSION
The meeting was called to order by Charles Barham, Jr., Chairman, at
6:00 P. M.
In addition to Mr. Barham, the following members were present: Mr. C.
Nelson Beck, Dr. McLemore Birdsong, Floyd E. Johnson, Mrs. Fred C. LiAdy, Cecil
Maupin, William T. Stevens, E. D. Tayloe, S. S. Clark, Secretary, and Downing L.
Smith, Commonwealth Attorney. Others present were James E. Bowen, Charlottesville
City Manager; S. L. Williamson, Charlottesville Planning Commission; Randolph H.
Perry, Llewellyn P. Haden, J. Howard Smith and Gordon E. Wiley, members of the
Industrial Committee of the Charlottesville -Albemarle Chamber of Commerce; B. J.
Dorsey, R. N. Fricke, and Lionel S. Key of the Virginia Electric and Power Company.
The matter of closing a section of St. Clair Street extending from Smith
Street to River Road in the Locust Grove subdivision was discussed. On motion of
William T. Stevens, seconded by C. Nelson Beck, the members approved a recommendation
to the Board of County Supervisors that the above mentioned section of St. Clair
Street be abandoned.
The Commission referred a plat of the Green Valleys Subdivision to its
executive committee for approval.
Mr. R. N. Fricke, Director, Research Section, Area Development Division of
the Virginia Electric and Power Company, presented an Industrial Site Survey of
Charlottesville and Albemarle County.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:30 P. M.
