MINUTES OF MEETING OF BOARD
DECEMBER 14TH, 1944
At this meeting Mr. Randolph had expected Mr. Bush
to report on the survey being made by his special committee,
but Mr. Bush could not be present because of business in
Richmond.
The Secretary reported one hundred and ten questionnaires
received from servicemen. These questionnaires were submitted to
the board and discussion of same was held. Of the 110, the
results were as follows:
26 wanted to return to school
22 wanted to farm
12 wanted to go into business
7 wanted to be mechanics
6 wanted to be drivers
2 wanted to be instructors
2 wanted to go in construction
21 wanted no assistance
a nd one each wanted the following: Engineering, factory, housework,
horticulture, hospital, journalism, laundry, mail carrier, power co.
railraod, raise chickens, and shipyard.
As this is an agricultural district and so many of the
servicemen wanted to return to the farm Mr. Randolph suggested that
we secure a booklet from the Extension 6ervice, V. P. I., Blacksburg,
entitled "Shall I be a Farmer." This book should be sent to the
servicemen who were interested in farming.
Mr. Randolph read a letter to the board from L. H.
Peterson. -of the local Chamber of Commerce. This letter was from a
professor of the University and suggested that shrubbery be planted
to hide the unsightly electric and telephone posts now marrying
the landscape along the Jefferson Park roadway and Fry Springs area,
as well as other areas where utility companies had disfigured the
countryside. This letter was ordered filed for future consideration.
Mr.Haden suggested that at the same time above project is considered if
something could be worked out to exterminate the caterpillars and other
insects which were attacting the tress along the highways, it would
be of great benefit to the community. Some local project could be
planned to take care of the above if work relief becomes necessary
again.
It was reported that Mr. Heidloff said he would like to
see more physical education in the schools under the supervision of
physical instructors.
##2. In an open discussion of how best to help the returning
servicemen and the community, Mrs. Smith stated that past experience
had proven we could not do much to educate the adult.individual and
change his habits, but we could improve the future community by
providing better educational facilities for the young. A discussion
of the school system brought o ut the need for better schools, and
the Secretary was commissioned to get copies of school survey and
mail to members of the board.
There being no further business, the meeting was
adjourned. All members were present with exception of Mr. Henry Bush.
