MINUTES OF MEETING OF BOARD
May 10th, 1945
All members of the Commission were present at this meeting
with the exception of Mrs. Gordon Smith.
Mr. Larned Randolph formally resigned as Chairman of the Board
although he was urged to continue in office. He stated he felt it
was better policy not to hold this office longer than one year.
After some discussion about the Chariman's office, Mrs.
Gordon SiRith was unanimously elected, and the Secretary was instructed
to notify Mrs. Smith by mail of her appointment.
The School Program was then brought up for discussion, and
the question was asked, " Should this commission approve school program
or not?" Mr. Warwick stated he did not feel it was practical to present
the whole program now as he did not believe it could be sold to the voting
public. The other members of the board agreed with him.. Mr. Haden
felt it would be a good idea to build one central high school now and
try it out first, and if this were successful, it would be easier to
sell the public on the remainder of the program. It was also agre6d
that the sanitary and electrical imporvements shown on school
offering should be carried out right now, and not be a part of
the school offering.
It was suggested that it would be a good idea for the
Board 6f Supervisors and the School Board to have a joint meeting
with the Parent Teachers Association, and possibly other represen—
tative groups in the community, to discuss the whole offering and
see what their reaction is, and to find out whether they all felt
the whole program, could be sold to the voting public now.
The board decided not to take any action on sending a
resolution to the School Board about the program until next meeting
and the secretary was requested to ask Mr. Graham to furnish commis—
sion with estimated increased cost of operating one white high school
and one joint negro high school as against all present high schools.
Each member was requested to bring in a written Resolution sugges-tig
what to do with schools.
As the County Chamber of Commerce had appointed a commit
tee to advise with the returning servicemen and to cooperate with
other such services in the community., the commission did not feel it
necessary to establish such service.
The question of Zoning was discussed and it was suggested
that we obtain copies of zoning ordinances in'rural counties similar
to Albemarle.
As Mr. Hunter Cockerell is to take Mr. Haden's place on
the board due to his position with the county, the commission requested
Mr. Haden to 6butinue to attend the meetings.
#2 A copy of the number of questionnaires returned and list of
First Choice of servicemen's preference for jobs is attached.
There being no futther business, the meeting was adjourned.
